Delhi rewards anyone willing to trade a taxi window for open air. Swing past India Gate at sunset when the lawns fill with families and the monument glows, or thread through the tangle of lanes around the Red Fort, where Old Delhi's noise, colour and smell of street food hit you all at once. On two wheels you feel all of it instead of watching it go by through glass.

Delhi isn't a city built for walking or waiting on the metro — the National Capital Region sprawls more than 50 km edge to edge, and its sights are split between the crowded lanes of Old Delhi and the wide avenues of the new city. A motorcycle or scooter cuts through both, ducking around traffic jams and stitching together a day that would otherwise mean three different taxis. It also opens up easy highway escapes, like the short run out to Surajkund, that public transport barely touches. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Delhi, this is exactly the kind of city where it pays off.

Top 10 things to see in Delhi by motorcycle

  1. India Gate — the city's central war memorial, and the natural start or finish point for any Delhi ride, especially beautiful lit up at night.
  2. Red Fort (Lal Qila) — the great Mughal fortress in Old Delhi, reached via the chaos of Netaji Subhash Marg, which is half the fun.
  3. Qutub Minar — a 12th-century minaret in Mehrauli, worth the scenic ride south of the city centre.
  4. Humayun's Tomb — the elegant precursor to the Taj Mahal, an easy detour just off Mathura Road.
  5. Lotus Temple — the flower-shaped Bahá'í house of worship, best reached early in the morning before the crowds arrive.
  6. Akshardham Temple — a riverside temple complex near the Noida border, a fitting stop on an eastern loop of the city.
  7. Chandni Chowk — Old Delhi's densest market street, one to ride slowly and then finish on foot.
  8. Jama Masjid — India's largest mosque, just steps from Chandni Chowk, with rooftop views over the old city.
  9. Garden of Five Senses — a landscaped park in Saket, a relaxed pause on a south-Delhi run.
  10. Surajkund — an ancient reservoir just across the Haryana border, and a classic weekend ride out of the capital.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Delhi?

You'll need your home motorcycle licence together with an International Driving Permit (IDP) — both are required by law, even if some shops check loosely. Most rental operators set their own minimum age, usually 18, sometimes higher for bigger bikes. A deposit is standard, in cash or as a card hold; some shops will ask for your passport as security, but you're not obliged to hand it over — a cash deposit or a photocopy is a reasonable alternative.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Delhi?

Expect roughly 1,300–1,800 INR per day for a standard 150–200cc bike or scooter in low season, rising to about 1,800–3,000 INR in high season. Fancy a Royal Enfield Classic or Bullet instead? Figure on 1,800–3,500 INR per day depending on the time of year.

  • Prices climb from October to February, when the weather is cool and dry and tourist and wedding season peaks.
  • Prices drop from May to August, during the heat and monsoon, when fewer travellers are on the road.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Delhi?

If you're planning a trip for November through February, book ahead — this is Delhi's high season, when the weather is at its best and demand for a motorcycle rental in Delhi climbs along with prices. Travelling between May and August keeps costs low, but the heat and monsoon rains make for a tougher ride. October to March is generally the sweet spot for comfortable riding at a fair price.

Local traffic rules in Delhi

India drives on the left, and horns do a lot of the talking — expect to be honked at when overtaken, and use your own horn before blind corners. Helmets are mandatory nationwide for both rider and pillion. All two-wheelers sold since April 2017 have their headlights on automatically, so riding lit up in daylight is completely normal. The blood alcohol limit is just 0.03%, effectively zero tolerance, and speed limits vary by state and road type, so stick to what's posted rather than assuming a fixed number. Keep to the left, overtake on the right, and if you want to hire a scooter or motorcycle in Delhi, just use the search form at the top of the page. Have a nice trip!

Which insurance is provided?

Most providers include basic third-party liability insurance in the rental price, with options to upgrade to fuller coverage that reduces or removes your deposit liability in case of damage or theft. Always confirm exactly what is and isn’t covered before you set off.

Extra services available

When you make an online motorbike reservation you can also order the following extra services and equipment: integral helmet, GPS navigation, intercom, unlimited mileage, top case, side cases, boots, jacket, gloves, individual guide or tour, map, full insurance, one-way rental, or delivery to your chosen address.
