Chennai does not reveal itself from a taxi window. The city's real rhythm — fishermen hauling nets at dawn on Marina Beach, the smell of filter coffee drifting out of a Mylapore café, the Bay of Bengal chasing you down the coast road toward Mahabalipuram — only opens up once you are riding through it yourself. Rent a motorcycle in Chennai and the whole Tamil Nadu coastline becomes your own: temples carved from single rocks, French-colonial streets in Puducherry, and beach towns most tour buses skip entirely.
This is a city built for two wheels. Chennai's must-see sights are strung out along the East Coast Road, a corridor running more than 60 km south toward Mahabalipuram and beyond — too far to walk, too slow by rickshaw, and far more rewarding with the freedom to stop wherever the sea view or the roadside dosa stall demands it. Inside the city, a motorcycle also lets you slip through Chennai's notoriously dense traffic on short hops between temples, markets and the beachfront, while the open ECR itself turns into part of the trip rather than just the road to it.
To rent a motorcycle in Chennai you'll need your home motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit — common rental bikes here are Royal Enfield 350s and 500s, and some operators set their own minimum age or experience requirements on top. The general minimum age is 18. A deposit is usually required, in cash or as a card hold; some shops will ask to hold your passport, but you're not obliged to hand it over — offer a cash deposit or a photocopy instead.
A standard scooter or 125–150cc bike runs INR 1,800–2,500 per day in low season and INR 2,800–3,800 per day in high season. If you want more power for the ECR run, a Royal Enfield 350 or 650 typically costs INR 4,500–6,500 per day.
High season runs November to February, with December and January the busiest and priciest weeks — book ahead if you're arriving then. Low season falls in the hot, humid stretch from April to September, when rates are lower but midday heat and monsoon rain call for a bit more care on the road.
India drives on the left, and helmets are mandatory by law for both rider and pillion. Two-wheelers built since April 2017 run their headlights on automatically in daylight, so riding lit is completely normal. Keep left and overtake on the right — horns here are used constantly as a courtesy signal, not aggression, so expect (and give) a polite honk before blind turns. Speed limits vary by road and are set by the state, so always follow the posted signage rather than assuming a fixed number. The blood alcohol limit is a strict 0.03%, effectively zero tolerance, so leave the bike if you've been drinking.
