Delhi rewards riders who move at their own pace. One morning you could be circling India Gate as the sun burns off the haze, and by afternoon you're weaving through the spice-scented lanes of Chandni Chowk in the old city. When you rent a scooter in Delhi, the capital stops being a blur seen through a taxi window and turns into something you actually get to ride through — past the Mughal grandeur of Humayun's Tomb, along the calm paths of Lodhi Garden, or out to Hauz Khas Village for a sunset by the lake ruins.

Delhi is enormous — the sights alone stretch tens of kilometres apart, from Qutub Minar in the south to Akshardham on the eastern bank of the Yamuna — so covering Old and New Delhi in a single day really only works on two wheels. Traffic here is dense and quick-changing, darting between markets, monuments and metro stations, and that favours a light, automatic scooter over a bulkier motorcycle. It's the kind of city where nimbleness beats horsepower every time.

Top 10 things to see in Delhi by scooter

  1. India Gate — the central war memorial, with wide roads around it that make for an easy first ride.
  2. Qutub Minar — a UNESCO-listed 73-metre minaret in South Delhi, a classic half-day ride.
  3. Humayun's Tomb — a Mughal-era tomb complex near Nizamuddin, scenic and steeped in history.
  4. Red Fort (Lal Qila) — the massive Mughal fort that opens onto Old Delhi's chaotic, rewarding streets.
  5. Lotus Temple — the flower-shaped Baháʼí House of Worship, a calm, photogenic stop in South Delhi.
  6. Akshardham Temple — a grand modern complex on the Yamuna's eastern bank, best visited in the evening for the light show.
  7. Chandni Chowk — Old Delhi's dense market street, best explored slowly for food and shopping.
  8. Lodhi Garden — a green park scattered with 15th-century tombs, a relaxed escape from traffic.
  9. Hauz Khas Village — lakeside ruins next to a lively café-and-boutique district, popular at sunset.
  10. Raj Ghat — Mahatma Gandhi's memorial park on the riverbank, quiet and easy to reach from Old Delhi.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Delhi?

You'll need your home motorcycle or scooter licence plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) covering gearless two-wheelers. Rental shops in tourist areas often check loosely, but it's best to carry both. The general minimum age is 18. Expect to leave a deposit, in cash or as a card hold — some shops will ask for your passport as security, but you're not obliged to hand it over; offering cash or a photocopy instead is a reasonable alternative.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Delhi?

Average rental prices run from 450–600 INR per day in low season and 700–900 INR per day in high season, with premium automatic models reaching 1000–1500 INR per day.

  • Prices climb from October through March, when the cool, dry weather brings peak tourist demand.
  • Prices drop from May through August, during the heat and monsoon, when tourist numbers are lowest.

When to book a rental scooter in Delhi?

October to March is high season — cooler weather draws the most visitors, so prices sit at their highest and it's worth booking ahead. May to August, covering the extreme heat and the monsoon, is low season with the cheapest rates, though riding conditions are tougher. If you're after the best mix of comfortable weather and easy availability, aim for the shoulder months just before or after the winter peak.

Local traffic rules in Delhi

India drives on the left, with overtaking on the right. Helmets are mandatory for both rider and pillion nationwide. Daytime headlights stay on automatically on every modern two-wheeler, so riding lit is completely normal. Speed limits are set by state and road type rather than a single national figure, so it's best to follow the posted signs. The blood alcohol limit is just 0.03%, effectively zero tolerance, with steep fines for anyone over it. Expect constant, communicative horn use rather than aggression — it's simply how Delhi traffic talks to itself.
