Toulon rewards anyone willing to see it from a saddle. Pedal out from the Vieux Port de Toulon along the water and within minutes you can be at Plage du Mourillon for a swim, or tracing the harbor curve toward the 16th-century Tour Royale with the naval fleet spread out below. This is a city built for two wheels — flat where it needs to be, dramatic where you want it to be.
The old town and port area are compact, largely flat and often car-unfriendly, with narrow lanes and scarce parking that make a bike faster than four wheels for hopping between the harbor, the beaches and the market. If you're after more of a challenge, the corniche roads and the foothills of Mont Faron give you a proper climb without ever leaving the city behind, so however fit you are, there's a route here that fits.
No licence is required to rent a bicycle in France. Rental companies do normally ask that whoever signs the contract is an adult, 18 or over, though children can ride equipment rented under a parent's agreement. By law, a helmet is compulsory only for riders and passengers under 12, though we'd recommend one at any age on the Mont Faron descent. A deposit is standard, usually held as a credit card pre-authorisation and released when the bike comes back undamaged — ask your chosen operator for the exact amount. No international driving permit is needed for a bicycle.
Expect to pay 3–8 EUR per day in low season, rising to 12–20 EUR per day in high season. Electric or premium road and hybrid bikes run 20–30 EUR per day.
High season runs June through August, peaking hard in late July and August when the whole of France is on holiday — book early if you want a good bike at a good price. Low season stretches from November to March, with the quietest roads and the softest prices of the year. May, June and September hit the sweet spot: warm, settled weather and noticeably better rates than midsummer.
France drives on the right, and as a cyclist you'll share that side of the road. Helmets are only legally required for riders and passengers under 12, though wearing one is always a good idea, especially on the Mont Faron climb. Built-up areas carry a 50 km/h limit for motor traffic, so bikes generally move at a comfortable, unhurried pace through town. The blood-alcohol limit for road users in France is 0.5 g/l, dropping to 0.2 g/l for newly licensed drivers — worth keeping in mind if you're combining a ride with lunch at Cours Lafayette.
