Paris rewards anyone willing to move slower than a taxi and faster than a walk. Pedal along the Seine on car-free paths and the Eiffel Tower appears through the trees exactly the way you hoped it would. Follow the water a little further and you're crossing onto Île de la Cité, with Notre-Dame rising just above the handlebars — no Metro transfer, no queue, just you and the city.
The city is flat, compact, and increasingly built for two wheels, with a growing network of protected cycle lanes and riverside paths that keep you clear of traffic. That combination makes it easy to cover the historic core faster than on foot, and just as easy to keep going — out toward the Bois de Boulogne or the Bois de Vincennes, loops that are a slog by public transport but effortless once you're already rolling.
Renting a bicycle in France requires no licence. Rental companies do usually ask that the person signing the contract be an adult, 18 or over, though children can ride equipment booked under a parent's agreement. A refundable deposit is standard practice, normally held on your credit card and released when the bike comes back undamaged — ask the specific operator for the exact amount. No International Driving Permit is needed for a bicycle. One legal note: helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers under 12.
Expect to pay 3–8 EUR per day in low season for a basic city bike, rising to 15–30 EUR per day in high season for a standard rental. Want an e-bike or a premium model? Budget 35–60 EUR per day.
High season runs June to August, when the city is busiest and prices sit at their highest. Low season stretches from November through March, with far fewer riders on the paths and noticeably cheaper rates. If you'd rather skip both extremes, aim for spring or early autumn, when the weather is still pleasant and the routes are quieter than in midsummer.
France drives on the right, and cyclists follow the same direction. A helmet isn't legally required for adult cyclists, only for riders and passengers under 12, though wearing one is always a sensible idea in city traffic. Built-up areas carry a general speed limit of 50 km/h for vehicles, and while that's aimed at cars and scooters, it's a fair reminder of how fast the streets around you can move. The blood-alcohol limit in France is 0.5 g/l, dropping to effectively zero for anyone on a probationary licence — a good rule of thumb even if you're just riding a bike home from dinner.
