Orléans has a way of turning a short ride into a small adventure. Pedal out from Place du Martroi, past the Joan of Arc statue, and within minutes you are gliding along the Quais de Loire with the river opening up beside you and the towers of the Cathédrale Sainte-Croix rising behind. Push on a little further and the Loire à Vélo route carries you clear out of town toward Olivet, where shaded paths follow the Loiret river to the sandy shores of Île Charlemagne. This is a city built for two wheels and a free afternoon.
The old town is compact, flat and largely closed to easy parking, which makes a bicycle the obvious way to cover it. Add in the fact that the Loire à Vélo runs right through the city center, linking the historic quarter to riverside destinations a few kilometers out that are too far to walk and not worth the hassle of a car, and cycling becomes the natural rhythm of a visit here. If you plan to rent a bike in Orléans, this is exactly the kind of city that rewards it.
No licence is required to hire a bicycle here. Rental companies normally ask that whoever signs the contract is an adult, 18 or over, though children can ride and be equipped under a parent's booking. A deposit is usually taken by credit card pre-authorisation and refunded when the bike comes back undamaged — the exact amount depends on the operator and the model, so it is worth confirming when you book. An International Driving Permit is not needed for a bicycle rental.
A standard city bike runs from EUR 3 to EUR 6 per day in low season, and from EUR 8 to EUR 15 per day in high season. If you would rather cover distance without effort, an electric-assist bike costs EUR 15 to EUR 25 per day.
High season runs June through August, with July and August the busiest and priciest months as both the city and the Loire à Vélo route fill up with visitors. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices are at their lowest but some riverside routes see less traffic and shorter daylight. If you are aiming for a summer trip, book a few weeks ahead so the better bikes are not already gone.
France drives on the right, and that applies to bike lanes and shared paths too. Cyclists are only legally required to wear a helmet if they are under 12, though wearing one is always sensible on busier quays and bridges. Speed limits in built-up areas top out at 50 km/h, which keeps traffic manageable for cyclists sharing the road. The blood-alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, dropping to 0.2 g/l for anyone in their first three years of holding a licence — a good reason to stick to water if you are cycling back from a riverside lunch.
