Lisbon rewards anyone willing to cover ground, and a bicycle is the easiest way to do it. Ride the flat waterfront from Praça do Comércio out to Belém, where the Torre de Belém and the Padrão dos Descobrimentos sit right along your route — with a stop at Pastéis de Belém more or less mandatory. Keep going and the river path leads into Parque das Nações, a modern stretch of wide, easy paths with the cable car and the Oceanário as your reward.

Central Lisbon is famously steep, with cobbled lanes that punish anyone on wheels, so a bike really only makes sense once you know where to point it. Stick to the river and you get long, flat, fast miles — the kind of distances that would wear out your legs and your patience on foot. Save the climbs for when you actually want a workout: pushing up to Castelo de São Jorge or Miradouro da Senhora do Monte is hard work, but the views justify every pedal stroke.

Top 10 things to see in Lisbon by bike

  1. Belém waterfront (Torre de Belém & Padrão dos Descobrimentos) — a flat riverside ride from downtown to two of the city's most iconic monuments, with pastéis de nata waiting at the finish.
  2. Praça do Comércio — the grand riverfront square that makes a natural start or finish for any ride along the Tagus.
  3. Ciclovia da Avenida da Índia / Doca de Belém — the dedicated bike lane linking downtown to Belém, mostly flat and scenic the whole way.
  4. LX Factory — a converted industrial complex under the 25 de Abril bridge, packed with cafés, shops and street art just off the river route.
  5. Cristo Rei viewpoint — hop the ferry with your bike from Cais do Sodré to Almada for sweeping views back over Lisbon and the bridge.
  6. Parque das Nações — a flat, modern waterfront district with wide paths, the cable car and the Oceanário, an easy loop for any rider.
  7. Miradouro da Senhora do Monte — a steep climb, but one of the best views over the city and castle you'll find anywhere.
  8. Castelo de São Jorge — a classic hilltop target in Alfama with panoramic rewards for confident riders.
  9. Cascais via the coastal cycle path — a long, mostly flat seaside route from Belém past the Oeiras beaches all the way to Cascais.
  10. Praia de Carcavelos — a popular beach on that same coastal path, a good stop midway to Cascais.

What do you need to rent a bike in Lisbon?

No licence is required for a standard bicycle or a pedal-assist e-bike — anyone can ride. Most rental shops will still ask for ID and a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount depending on the shop and the bike. Since no licence is involved, there's no need for an International Driving Permit either.

How much does it cost to rent a bike in Lisbon?

Basic city bikes run EUR 3–8 per day in low season, rising to EUR 10–20 per day in high season. If you'd rather cover the Cascais coastal path on an e-bike or a premium hybrid, expect EUR 20–35 per day.

  • Cheapest from November to February, when demand drops off.
  • Highest from June to September, in step with peak tourist season.

When to book a rental bike in Lisbon?

High season runs June to September, when the waterfront gets busy and prices climb accordingly — book a few days ahead if you're travelling in July or August. Low season, November through February, is quieter and cheaper, though you'll want to check the weather before committing to a long coastal ride. April, May and October sit nicely in between: mild, dry, and easier on both your legs and your budget.

Local traffic rules in Lisbon

Portugal drives on the right, and that applies to cyclists too. A helmet is compulsory only for riders under 16, though wearing one is always sensible on Lisbon's busier streets. Speed limits in built-up areas top out at 50 km/h, so traffic won't be flying past you on the flat stretches. Drivers overtaking a cyclist must leave at least 1.5 m of clearance, and if you're riding outside town at night or in poor visibility, lights and a reflective vest are required. None of this should worry you on a bicycle, but it's worth knowing before you set off.

Which insurance is provided with my rental bicycle?

Some include simple loss or damage protection in the price, while others cover it through your deposit; always check the exact terms on the booking page before you confirm.

Extra services available
