Lisbon rewards anyone willing to cover ground, and a bicycle is the easiest way to do it. Ride the flat waterfront from Praça do Comércio out to Belém, where the Torre de Belém and the Padrão dos Descobrimentos sit right along your route — with a stop at Pastéis de Belém more or less mandatory. Keep going and the river path leads into Parque das Nações, a modern stretch of wide, easy paths with the cable car and the Oceanário as your reward.
Central Lisbon is famously steep, with cobbled lanes that punish anyone on wheels, so a bike really only makes sense once you know where to point it. Stick to the river and you get long, flat, fast miles — the kind of distances that would wear out your legs and your patience on foot. Save the climbs for when you actually want a workout: pushing up to Castelo de São Jorge or Miradouro da Senhora do Monte is hard work, but the views justify every pedal stroke.
No licence is required for a standard bicycle or a pedal-assist e-bike — anyone can ride. Most rental shops will still ask for ID and a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount depending on the shop and the bike. Since no licence is involved, there's no need for an International Driving Permit either.
Basic city bikes run EUR 3–8 per day in low season, rising to EUR 10–20 per day in high season. If you'd rather cover the Cascais coastal path on an e-bike or a premium hybrid, expect EUR 20–35 per day.
High season runs June to September, when the waterfront gets busy and prices climb accordingly — book a few days ahead if you're travelling in July or August. Low season, November through February, is quieter and cheaper, though you'll want to check the weather before committing to a long coastal ride. April, May and October sit nicely in between: mild, dry, and easier on both your legs and your budget.
Portugal drives on the right, and that applies to cyclists too. A helmet is compulsory only for riders under 16, though wearing one is always sensible on Lisbon's busier streets. Speed limits in built-up areas top out at 50 km/h, so traffic won't be flying past you on the flat stretches. Drivers overtaking a cyclist must leave at least 1.5 m of clearance, and if you're riding outside town at night or in poor visibility, lights and a reflective vest are required. None of this should worry you on a bicycle, but it's worth knowing before you set off.
