Aveiro rewards anyone willing to leave the car behind. Pedal out from the canal-side center and within half an hour you can be standing among the candy-striped houses of Costa Nova, or watching the surf roll in beneath the black-and-white Farol da Barra lighthouse. The route runs flat and mostly traffic-free the whole way, so the ride itself becomes part of the postcard rather than a means to get to one.
That flatness is really the whole story. Aveiro sits low on a lagoon, with barely a hill worth mentioning, and the city has grown a proper network of canal-side and coastal cycle paths connecting the center to the beach towns. A basic rental bike handles all of it easily, and it solves the one real headache of visiting here by car: parking near the beaches is tight in summer, while a bike glides straight past the queues. If you want to rent a bike in Aveiro, this is a place where two wheels genuinely beat four.
None of this requires a licence — a standard bicycle or pedal-assist e-bike is open to anyone. Most operators do set a minimum age, typically around 16, and will ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount varying by shop and by bike. No international driving permit is needed for a bicycle rental.
A standard city or beach cruiser runs roughly 3-6 EUR per day in low season and 8-15 EUR per day in high season, with multi-day and weekly bookings usually lowering the daily rate. If you want an e-bike or a higher-spec touring model for the longer haul to Vagueira or São Jacinto, expect 15-25 EUR per day.
July and August are Aveiro's high season, driven by both the national summer holidays and the crowds heading for the beach towns — book ahead if you're travelling then, as good bikes go quickly. November through March is low season, with the lowest prices but wetter, cooler days. For the best balance, aim for spring or early autumn, when the weather is warm and dry and the canal paths are far less crowded.
Portugal drives on the right, and cyclists share that rule of the road. A helmet is only legally required for riders under 16, though wearing one is always sensible. Built-up areas are capped at 50 km/h for motor traffic, so cycle paths tend to feel calm rather than rushed. Drivers overtaking a cyclist must leave at least 1.5 m of clearance, and if you're riding outside town after dark or in poor visibility, lights and a reflective vest are required. Portugal's drink-drive limit is 0.5 g/l, so this is a place where the roads are shared responsibly — just use the same common sense on a bike that you would on foot.

When you make a reservation of a bicycle you also can order the following extra services and equipment: helmet, GPS navigation, clip pedals, side cases, rear rack, basket, light, gloves, speedometer, individual guide or tour, full insurance, one-way rental, or delivery to the address of your choice.
