Madeira is not a place you sightsee from a bus window — it is a place you feel through your legs and lungs. Pedal out of Funchal toward Câmara de Lobos, the fishing village Winston Churchill once painted, and the harbour colours alone are worth the climb. Push further and the island keeps raising the stakes: the glass-bottomed skywalk at Cabo Girão, one of Europe's highest sea cliffs, or the volcanic sea pools at Porto Moniz, where a full-day loop rewards you with a swim you'll actually remember.
This terrain was practically made for two wheels. Madeira is steep, folded, and threaded with narrow switchback roads where a car feels clumsy and parking in village centres is a genuine headache. A bike lets you dart between Funchal's viewpoints, coastal hamlets, and levada trailheads without hunting for a place to leave four wheels, and it gets you to miradouros that are exhausting on foot but hardly worth a whole day's car hire. If you want to rent a bicycle in Funchal, this is exactly the kind of island that makes the extra effort worthwhile.
No licence is required for a standard bicycle or a pedal-assist e-bike in Portugal, so this is one of the simplest vehicles to rent on the island. A helmet is only compulsory by law for cyclists under 16, though it's sensible to wear one on Madeira's descents regardless. Rental companies typically ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount varying by operator and bike model. No international driving permit is needed since no licence is required in the first place.
Average rental prices run from EUR 3–5 per day in low season, rising to EUR 8–12 per day in high season, and EUR 15–25 per day for premium models such as e-bikes.
High season runs June to September and peaks hard in July and August, when demand — and prices — are highest. Low season stretches from November to March, with the cheapest rates outside the New Year's rush. If you're chasing the best mix of good weather and lower prices, shoulder months like March and October are worth booking ahead for.
Portugal drives on the right. Helmets aren't legally required for adult cyclists, but they are compulsory for anyone under 16, and given Madeira's descents, wearing one is simply good sense. Built-up areas carry a 50 km/h speed limit for motor traffic, so expect vehicles to pass you at moderate speed on village roads; when overtaking a cyclist, drivers must leave at least 1.5 m of clearance. If you're riding outside built-up areas at night or in poor visibility, lights and a reflective vest are required. The island's roads are winding and often narrow, so ride predictably and take blind corners with care.
