Hurghada rewards anyone willing to cover ground, and a bicycle is the easiest way to do it. Ride down from your hotel along the coast and you can wander the old lanes of El Dahar, pedal out to the yachts moored at Hurghada Marina, or just cruise the seafront with the Red Sea on one side and the desert hills on the other. It's the kind of place where the best moments — a call to prayer drifting over the old souq, a sunset over the water near Senzo Mall — happen between destinations, not just at them.
The city is built as one long coastal strip, with hotels, downtown and the marina spread over several kilometres of mostly flat, paved road — too far to comfortably walk, but an easy, scenic distance to pedal. Traffic away from the main highway is light to moderate, the desert coast has no serious climbs, and a basic rental bike is enough to unlock the whole city without waiting on taxis. If you want to rent a bicycle in Hurghada, this is a city built for exactly that.
None of the formality that comes with a motor vehicle applies here: cycling in Egypt requires no licence, no registration and no minimum age. Rental shops may still ask for ID or a small refundable deposit, but there's no International Driving Permit to carry and no paperwork standing between you and the road. It's the simplest way to get moving in Hurghada.
Expect around 150 EGP per day in low season, rising to roughly 250-350 EGP per day in high season for a standard bike, with e-bikes and higher-spec models running about 400-600 EGP per day.
High season runs roughly October to April, peaking in December and January, when comfortable temperatures make riding genuinely pleasant and rates sit at their highest. Low season falls in June to August, when the heat is intense but prices are at their most affordable. If you're travelling over winter, book a few days ahead; outside the peak months, a rental bike is usually available on short notice.
Egypt drives on the right, so keep to the right-hand side of the road and pass on the left. Helmets aren't legally required for cyclists, but riding defensively matters more than the rulebook — lane markings are treated loosely and horns are used as communication, not aggression. Speed limits in built-up areas sit around 60 km/h, which matters less on a bike than staying alert to scooters and cars pulling out unexpectedly. Alcohol and the road don't mix in Egypt under any circumstances, and it's worth being off busy roads before dark, since unlit vehicles and unmarked bumps are common at night.
