Annemasse doesn't feel like a border town so much as a launchpad. Point your wheels south and the ridge of the Salève rises straight out of the streets; point them north and a flat, car-free path rolls you across the frontier into the heart of Geneva before you've broken a sweat. Pedal out to the Téléphérique du Salève in nearby Étrembières and you can trade a steep climb for a cable-car lift, arriving at the ridge with Lake Geneva, the city and Mont Blanc all laid out below. Few places let you swap countries and altitude this easily on two wheels.
What makes Annemasse genuinely made for cycling is the infrastructure, not just the scenery. The Voie Verte greenway runs traffic-free straight into Geneva, turning a trip that's a headache by car — border queues, one-way systems, parking — into a quick, pleasant ride. Add a mountain on your doorstep and a lake shore within easy reach, and you've got flat commuter routes and a proper Alpine detour within the same afternoon. That range is exactly why so many visitors choose to rent a bicycle in Annemasse rather than rely on buses or a car.
No licence is required to hire a bicycle. Rental companies generally ask the hirer to be an adult, 18 or over, to sign the contract, though children can ride on a parent's booking. By French law, a helmet is compulsory for riders and passengers under 12. A deposit is standard, usually held as a card pre-authorisation and released on return, and an IDP isn't needed for a bicycle rental.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you're typically looking at 3–8 EUR per day, rising to 12–25 EUR per day in high season, with premium models such as e-bikes running 20–40 EUR per day.
High season runs June through August, peaking hard in late July and August when France itself is on holiday — book ahead if you're travelling then, especially around the Salève and lakeside routes. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices drop but some outlets trim their hours. For the best mix of good weather and lower rates, aim for May, June or September; early October can still be pleasant too.
France drives on the right, and cyclists share that rule of the road. Helmets aren't legally required for adult cyclists, only for riders and passengers under 12, though wearing one is always sensible on descents off the Salève. In town, the general speed limit for vehicles is 50 km/h from the town-name sign, a useful reference for how fast traffic around you may be moving. The blood-alcohol limit for road users is 0.5 g/l, dropping to 0.2 g/l during a new driver's probationary period — worth keeping in mind if you're combining a ride with any wine tasting nearby. Outside built-up areas at night or in poor visibility, cyclists should wear a reflective vest.
