There's a kind of riding you only find on Maui: pull onto the Road to Hana and the next two hours become the destination itself, one of over 600 curves threading past waterfalls, sea cliffs and the black-sand cove at Waiʻanapanapa State Park. Climb the other direction at dawn and you're switchbacking up Haleakalā, watching the crater fill with light from 10,000 feet above the clouds. Few places reward two wheels this generously.
Maui simply wasn't built for cars. Its best sights sit strung along long, winding coastal and mountain roads with almost no traffic once you clear the resort towns, so the drive stops being a means of transport and becomes the main event. Public transit barely exists outside Kahului and Kihei, which rules out a bicycle or scooter for covering real ground, but a motorcycle gives you the range to chase waterfalls in the morning and watch surfers at sunset, with none of the parking hassle a rental car brings.
You'll need a motorcycle endorsement (commonly called a Class M licence) added to your regular driver's licence — this is required in every U.S. state, and rental companies will ask to see it along with proof of riding experience. An international driving permit isn't required. Most operators set their own minimum age, typically 21 and up, with riders 25 and older often avoiding a young-rider surcharge. Expect to leave a deposit or a credit-card hold, and make sure the card is in your own name, since that's usually mandatory.
A standard scooter or mid-size motorcycle runs USD 25-35 per day in low season and USD 45-70 per day in high season. If you want something with more presence, a Harley-Davidson or large touring bike costs USD 150-250 per day.
High season runs June through August, with a second push around the December-January holidays, and this is when both prices and demand peak — book a few weeks ahead if you're arriving then. Low season falls in the shoulder months, especially April-May and September-November, when you'll find better rates and more availability without booking far in advance.
Traffic keeps to the right, as everywhere in the United States. Hawaii requires a helmet for motorcycle riders under 18, so most touring adults ride helmeted by choice rather than law — we'd still recommend it on a road with this many curves. Speed limits generally sit at 25-35 mph through towns and rise on open stretches, though the Road to Hana itself is slow going regardless of the posted limit. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.08%, with zero tolerance under 21, so save the mai tai for after you've parked the bike.

With each passing mile it only gets better. From the day the first Electra Glide® motorcycle crossed the country in 1965, it’s had a singular mission. Make the ride a cosmic leap beyond anything the rider has experienced in terms of function and comfort. So here we are countless miles later. And everything we’ve learned has been built into these Project RUSHMORE machines. One-touch saddlebags, GPS and infotainment, better airflow around the rider, more passing power, the list goes on. And we did it all without letting the soul of the machine get lost in gadgetry.

The Street Glide is known for its excellent handling and sleek lines that come as a result of the low-rise windshield. The hard saddlebags provide good storage space for 1-2 people on shorter journeys. The addition of a small luggage rack behind the passenger seat allows for extra luggage storage on longer rides or tours. Riders over 6’ tall should be aware that the windshield provides little to no wind protection from the neck up, so a full-face helmet is recommended for extended riding at higher speeds.

The 2019 Harley-Davidson® Iron 883™ is an original icon of the Harley-Davidson Dark Custom style. It sets the standard for the raw, stripped-down, blacked-out look. Now with fresh, new graphics. It’s the poster bike of the anti-chrome movement. You’ve got a black powder-coated 883cc engine with black rocker covers. Black on the throwback round air cleaner cover. Chopped fenders, to show off a little rubber and black front forks with gaiters to add a little old-school nostalgia. The combination of a lowered front and rear suspension together with a low, narrow solo seat—just 25.7-inches high—provides comfort and confidence for riders of all sizes and experience. The ride is responsive and plush, whether you're dodging urban potholes or out exploring the back roads.

The Heritage Softail® Classic is styled to recall the past. The fat front fork is reminiscent of a 1949 Harley-Davidson Hydra Glide. The old-fashioned looking, studded-leather saddlebags, chrome-studded seat add to its classic look, as does the full windshield, floorboards, large chrome headlamp with twin passing lamps and Fat Bob fuel tank. Sixteen-inch laced wheels feature a new chromed-aluminum hub and a machined-aluminum rear hub. The Heritage Softail is American iron at its finest; the perfect blend of chrome, leather and steel. This bike has a wide, comfortable seat for riders; and one of the most comfortable seat and backrest combinations for passengers. The riding position is a bit more reclined that other touring models, and the handlebar height provides riders with a sensation of riding a classic American chopper, while still allowing for a comfortable and safe ride. The 25.5" seat height makes it an attractive bike for riders with shorter legs who still want the comfort and handling of a touring model.
