Palm Springs doesn't ask you to walk it — it asks you to ride. Point a motorcycle up Tramway Road toward the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway station and the desert floor drops away below you, or head east on the open highway toward Joshua Tree National Park, where the road narrows into twisties between boulder fields that look lifted from another planet. This is a landscape built for two wheels, and once you feel the dry desert air on the open road, you'll understand why so many riders come back year after year.
Downtown Palm Springs is compact and easy to park in, but everything worth seeing sits outside it — scattered across a valley where distances stretch and the towns thin out fast. A car feels clumsy here, and on foot you'd barely scratch the surface. On a motorcycle you can duck into downtown for lunch on Palm Canyon Drive, then be climbing the switchbacks of Highway 74 within the hour. Few American desert cities reward two wheels quite like this one.
Every state requires a motorcycle endorsement or licence added to your driver's licence, and rental companies will also want to see some riding experience on your record. No International Driving Permit is required nationwide, though it's worth carrying one alongside your home licence. Expect a minimum age of 21, with many operators preferring 25 and up to avoid a young-rider surcharge. A credit card in your own name is normally required to cover the deposit or security hold.
Average rental prices run from USD 25-35 per day in low season and USD 45-70 per day in high season, with premium models reaching USD 80-150+ per day.
High season runs roughly January to April, so book a few weeks ahead if you're planning a spring trip. Prices ease off from June to September, when the heat is fierce but rentals are easiest to find on short notice. For the most comfortable riding weather, aim for April to June or September to October, when temperatures are milder and prices sit between the two extremes.
Traffic drives on the right, as everywhere in the United States. California requires helmets for all motorcycle riders, so plan on wearing one for the whole trip. Speed limits typically run 25-35 mph on city streets and up to 65-75 mph on the interstates connecting Palm Springs to Joshua Tree and beyond. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.08%, with zero tolerance under 21, so keep riding and drinking well separated. California is also one of the few states that permits lane splitting, so watch for motorcycles moving between lanes in slower traffic.
