Old Town Key West is made for two wheels — pull up right at the Southernmost Point Buoy for the classic photo, then keep rolling down Duval Street as the bars and shop windows slide by. Come evening, park easily near Mallory Square and join the sunset crowd of street performers and onlookers along the harbor. Once you've had your fill of the historic streets, the open road north on the Overseas Highway is waiting, and a motorcycle is the best way to meet it.
Key West's Old Town is tiny, tangled and short on car parking, so a scooter or motorcycle turns a five-minute ride into what would otherwise be a long search for a spot. You can duck between Duval Street, the beaches and the historic sights without ever circling a block twice. And beyond town, the Keys themselves reward riders: the run out along the Overseas Highway toward Seven Mile Bridge is one of the great open-road experiences in Florida, and it's simply better felt on a bike than boxed up in a car.
Every state requires a motorcycle endorsement (commonly called a Class M licence) added to your driver's licence, and Key West rental operators will also want to see documented riding experience before handing over the keys. No International Driving Permit is required nationally, though it's worth carrying one alongside your home licence just in case. Minimum age is set by the rental company rather than by law — expect 21 as a baseline, with many operators preferring 25 and up, especially for larger motorcycles. A deposit or credit-card hold is standard, and the card needs to be in the renter's own name.
Standard scooters run roughly USD 50–90 per day in high season, while larger touring bikes or Harley-Davidson-style motorcycles can reach USD 100–180 or more per day.
High season runs roughly December to April, and booking ahead matters most in those months since fleets get reserved early. If you'd rather ride with fewer crowds and lower prices, June through September is the quieter, cheaper stretch — just keep an eye on the forecast, since it overlaps with hurricane season.
Traffic drives on the right, as everywhere in the United States. Florida requires a helmet for riders under 21, or for any rider carrying less than USD 10,000 in medical insurance coverage — wearing one regardless is the simplest way to stay covered and safe. Speed limits sit around 25–35 mph on Old Town streets, rising on the Overseas Highway once you're out of the historic district. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.08%, with zero tolerance under 21, so save the sunset cocktails for after you've parked the bike.
