Portland doesn't hand you its best side from a car window. You have to go find it — out along the Historic Columbia River Highway with waterfalls dropping right off the shoulder, or up the winding grade toward Timberline Lodge, where Mount Hood fills the whole windshield. A motorcycle is how you actually get there, and how you get there well.
This is a city built for two wheels. Downtown is compact enough that parking a bike is no trouble at all, and traffic that would eat up a car commuter's afternoon barely slows you down. But the real reason riders love it here is what surrounds it: the Columbia River Gorge, the northern Oregon Coast and Mount Hood all sit within an hour or two, so a single day can start with city streets and end on a mountain switchback. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Portland, you're really renting access to everything around it.
You'll need a motorcycle endorsement (commonly called a Class M licence) added to your driver's licence — every US state requires this, and Oregon is no exception. An International Driving Permit isn't legally required, but it's worth carrying if your home licence isn't in English, since some rental companies prefer to see one. Most operators set their own minimum age, typically 21 and up, with 25+ often needed to avoid a young-rider surcharge. Expect to leave a deposit or a hold on a credit card in your own name; the amount depends on the bike and the company.
A standard or mid-size bike runs USD 30-45 per day in low season and USD 60-90 per day in high season, while large-displacement touring and adventure models — think BMW GS or a Harley tourer — can reach USD 100-150 or more per day.
High season runs roughly May to September, when the Gorge and the coast roads are at their best and prices climb accordingly. Low season stretches from November to March, Portland's rainy months, when demand — and rates — drop well below summer levels. If you're planning a trip for June through August, book ahead; outside that window you'll have an easier time finding a bike on short notice, and a better price for it.
Traffic keeps to the right, as everywhere in the US. Oregon requires a helmet for every rider, no exceptions by age. Speed limits generally sit around 25-35 mph on city streets, climbing to 55-65 mph on rural two-lane roads and up to 65 mph on the interstates. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.08%, with zero tolerance under 21, and headlights stay on by day — automatic on most modern bikes anyway. Lane splitting isn't permitted in Oregon, so plan to hold your lane like everyone else.
