Fort Myers moves at its own pace — palm-lined boulevards, causeways strung between barrier islands, and warm air that makes you want to keep the throttle low and the windows of your helmet up. Ride out along McGregor Boulevard toward the Edison and Ford Winter Estates and you will understand why locals call it one of the prettiest avenues in Florida, its canopy of royal palms rolling by as the road bends toward the water. Cross the causeway to Sanibel Island and the pace slows even further, into shelling beaches and quiet coastal lanes that a car simply cannot enjoy the same way.
This is flat, easygoing country built for cruising rather than aggressive riding, which is exactly what makes it ideal on two wheels. Bridges and causeways connect the islands without a single hill to fight, traffic in the beach towns crawls at a pace a scooter handles effortlessly, and parking that frustrates drivers in high season simply is not a problem when you can tuck a bike into a corner near the boardwalk. Whether you want to rent a motorcycle in Fort Myers for a day of island-hopping or a scooter for a quick run downtown, you will cover more ground, spend less on parking, and reach places the rental-car crowd never quite gets to.
To rent a motorcycle you will need a valid motorcycle endorsement on your driver's licence — a plain car licence is not enough once you go above a small moped. Rental companies typically set their own minimum age, commonly 21 and up, with 25+ often required to avoid a young-rider surcharge. A credit card in your own name is normally mandatory, along with a deposit or credit-card hold that varies by operator and vehicle. An International Driving Permit is not legally required in Florida, though it is worth carrying if your licence is not in English.
Expect to pay in the range of 25-35 USD per day during low season and 45-70 USD per day during high season, with premium models running 70-120 USD per day.
High season runs December to April, when Fort Myers fills with winter visitors and prices sit at their highest — book early if you are planning a trip then. Low season runs June through September: fewer riders on the road, softer prices, but hotter weather and a real chance of tropical storms. If you want mild temperatures without the premium, aim for the shoulder months around October-November or April-May.
Traffic drives on the right, as across the rest of the United States. Florida does not require helmets for riders over 21 who carry at least 10,000 USD in medical insurance coverage, but wearing one is strongly recommended regardless. Speed limits generally run 25-35 mph on residential and beach-town streets and up to 65-70 mph on the highways connecting the islands to the mainland. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.08%, with zero tolerance under 21, and open containers are illegal in the vehicle. Watch for pedestrians and cyclists in beach areas, where traffic thins out but foot traffic picks up.
