Lagos rewards anyone willing to get off the pedestrianized old town and onto the coast road, and a motorcycle is the easiest way to do it. Ride out to Ponta da Piedade for golden cliffs and sea grottoes lit up at sunset, then keep going west until the road runs out at Cabo de São Vicente, Europe's dramatic southwestern tip. In between are cove beaches, hilltop viewpoints and back roads that a rental car simply can't reach as easily. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Lagos, our website connects you with local operators who know exactly which routes make the trip worthwhile.
The historic centre of Lagos is small and largely closed to cars, but everything that makes the western Algarve special sits 10 to 45 minutes outside it, along narrow, winding roads with limited or paid parking at the best viewpoints. A scooter slips past summer traffic on the N125 and around the marina, then parks for free right at the cliff edge. Here, getting there is half the fun rather than a chore to get through before it.
Requirements depend on engine size. For scooters up to 50cc you need at least category AM, which any full car licence also covers. Machines up to 125cc call for an A1 entitlement, mid-power motorcycles need A2 (minimum age 18), and unrestricted bikes require full category A, usually from age 24 or from 20 with prior A2 experience. Note that Portugal's rule letting local B-licence holders ride 125cc applies only to Portuguese licences, not to visitors, so bring the right category with you. Non-EU visitors should also carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. A credit card deposit is standard practice, with the amount set by each rental operator depending on the vehicle.
Scooters and small motorcycles run EUR 19–25 per day in low season and EUR 35–45 per day in high season. Bigger touring and adventure bikes, in the BMW F800GS/F900R class, cost roughly EUR 75–95 per day across the year.
High season runs from June to September, with July and August the busiest and priciest weeks — book a few weeks ahead if you're travelling then, since popular models sell out. Low season, from November to March, brings the cheapest rates and quieter roads, though the Algarve stays mild enough to ride comfortably nearly year-round. If you'd rather split the difference, April to June and September to October offer warm, dry weather without the peak-season crowds or prices.
Portugal drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any moped, scooter or motorcycle, and mopeds and motorcycles must run with dipped headlights on at all times, day included. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads and 120 km/h on motorways, though mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and banned from motorways altogether. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l — checkpoints are common, especially around the marina at night, so it's worth planning rides with that in mind.
