Albufeira rewards anyone willing to leave the beach chair behind. Rent a motorcycle here and the Algarve stops being a string of postcard beaches you glimpse from a coach window and becomes a coastline you can actually ride — cliffside curves out to Praia da Marinha, a stop at the clifftop path above Benagil Cave, an inland detour up to the Moorish walls of Silves. The old town's tangle of lanes around Rua da Bicicleta feels made for two wheels, and the harbour makes a natural place to start the day.
The old town's narrow, congested streets and scarce parking are exactly where a scooter or motorcycle earns its keep — you slip through where cars queue, then leave it right by the marina or the beach steps. Beyond town, the real appeal is the Algarve's geography: the best sights sit 15 to 30 minutes apart along twisty coastal and inland roads that are far more fun, and far more flexible, on a bike than stuck behind a tour bus in high-season traffic.
For a scooter up to 50cc you need category AM, which any full car licence also covers. For a 125cc scooter or motorcycle, visitors need an A1 entitlement — the local rule allowing Portuguese B-licence holders onto 125cc bikes doesn't extend to foreign licences. Larger machines require A2 or full category A depending on power. Bring an International Driving Permit if your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, expect a minimum age set by the rental company itself (usually above the legal minimum), and set aside a deposit, normally held on a credit card, with the amount varying by vehicle and operator.
Expect around 20-30 EUR per day in low season and 35-55 EUR per day in high season, with premium or larger-cc machines running 45-70+ EUR per day against 18-25 EUR per day for a basic scooter.
High season runs June to September, tightest and priciest in July and August when demand across the Algarve spikes. Low season, November to March, brings the cheapest rentals but also cooler, wetter weather. If you want warm, dry riding without the summer crowds and premium rates, April to June or September to October is the sweet spot.
Portugal drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a moped, scooter or motorcycle, and motorcycles must run with dipped headlights on at all times, day included. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on the open road and 120 km/h on motorways, though mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways at all. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to 0.2 g/l for anyone who has held a licence less than three years, and roadside checks are common, so it's not worth the risk.
Once you've got the paperwork sorted, just use the search form at the top of the page to rent a motorcycle in Albufeira. Have a nice trip!
