Cascais rewards anyone who trades four wheels for two. Rent a motorcycle here and the Estrada do Guincho unfolds ahead of you — a ribbon of curves hugging the Atlantic, with the cliffs of Boca do Inferno behind you and the wide surf of Praia do Guincho waiting just up the coast. Push on and the road climbs toward Cabo da Roca, the westernmost tip of mainland Europe, where the ocean stretches out with nothing between you and the horizon.

This stretch of coast was practically built for riding. Distances between the sights are short, but the roads are narrow and winding, and in summer they clog with tour buses and rental cars hunting for parking that simply isn't there. On a motorcycle you slip past the queues into Sintra, tuck into a spot at a cliffside viewpoint that a car could never fit, and string together Cascais, Guincho and Cabo da Roca in one loop that would eat an entire day by bus.

Top 10 things to see in Cascais by motorcycle

  1. Boca do Inferno — a dramatic sea chasm just minutes from central Cascais, an easy first stop on any ride.
  2. Praia do Guincho — a wide Atlantic surf beach reached along the scenic coastal road, loved by riders and surfers alike.
  3. Cabo da Roca — the westernmost point of mainland Europe, at the end of a winding cliffside road from Guincho.
  4. Estrada do Guincho (N247) — the coastal road linking Cascais, Guincho and Cabo da Roca, prized for its curves and ocean views.
  5. Sintra (Palacio da Pena) — a short ride inland into forested hills leads to this colorful hilltop palace.
  6. Quinta da Regaleira — a Gothic estate in Sintra with mysterious wells and tunnels, easy to pair with the palace.
  7. Cascais Marina — a natural starting point for rides, with cafes and views over the bay.
  8. Praia da Rainha — a small, sheltered cove beach right in town, a quick scenic stop before heading further along the coast.
  9. Farol de Santa Marta — a compact lighthouse and museum on the seafront, good for a short detour.
  10. Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais — the protected hills and coast between the two towns, laced with quiet roads for a longer scenic loop.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Cascais?

For a moped or scooter up to 50cc, category AM is enough — available from age 16, and a full car licence (B) covers it too. Anything up to 125cc calls for an A1 motorcycle entitlement; the Portuguese rule letting local B-licence holders ride 125cc doesn't extend to visitors, so bring the right category. An international driving permit (IDP) is required alongside your home licence, and rental companies will hold a deposit on your card, with the amount depending on the vehicle.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Cascais?

Average rental prices run 25-30 EUR per day in low season and 35-50 EUR per day in high season, with premium models reaching 50-70 EUR per day.

  • Cheapest rates land in November-February.
  • Prices climb steadily through spring and peak in July-August.
  • Booking a few days ahead in summer helps you avoid the best bikes selling out.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Cascais?

High season runs June to September, peaking in July and August, when demand along this coast is at its highest and prices follow suit. Low season stretches from November to March, with the softest prices of the year. If you'd rather ride in warm, dry weather without the crowds or the premium, aim for April-June or September-October.

Local traffic rules in Cascais

Portugal drives on the right, and helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger on a moped, scooter or motorcycle. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on open roads and 120 km/h on motorways, though mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways at all. Dipped headlights stay on at all times, day and night. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to 0.2 g/l if you've held your licence for under three years, and roadside checks are common along this stretch of coast.
