Tavira has a way of rewarding anyone who bothers to look past the main square, and a bicycle is the easiest way to do that. Pedal across the seven-arch Ponte Romana in the morning light, then keep going until the streets thin out and the salt pans of the Ria Formosa open up around you. From there it is a short, flat ride to the Quatro Águas ferry dock, where a quick boat hop drops you on the barrier-island sands of Ilha de Tavira — a beach you would otherwise burn half a day reaching on foot.
This is flat, compact terrain, and that is exactly why a bike suits it so well. The old town is small enough to cross in minutes, the riverside promenades are gentle and traffic-light, and the surrounding lagoon country is criss-crossed by quiet lanes built for exactly this kind of exploring. Distances that would wear you out walking — and that feel pointless in a car, with nowhere obvious to park — turn into easy 2 to 8 km hops by bike, and the coastal cycle path linking Tavira to its neighbouring villages means you barely have to share the road.
Nothing more than enthusiasm, really. Portugal doesn't require a licence for a standard bicycle or a pedal-assist e-bike, so there's no paperwork, no IDP and no age restriction to worry about. Most operators still ask for a small deposit, usually held on a credit card, and it's worth carrying ID just in case the shop wants to note it down.
Expect to pay around EUR 3-6 per day in low season and EUR 8-15 per day in high season, with e-bikes and premium multi-gear models running EUR 10-20 per day.
If you're chasing the lowest prices, aim for the low season between November and March, when the Algarve empties out and rates are at their most relaxed. High season runs June to September and peaks hard in July and August, when both prices and availability tighten up, so booking a few days ahead is a sensible move if you're arriving mid-summer. Spring and early autumn sit comfortably in between — warm, dry, and usually easy to book with little notice.
Portugal drives on the right, and while a helmet isn't legally required for adult cyclists, it's compulsory for anyone under 16 and a sensible habit regardless of age. Speed limits in town top out at 50 km/h, rising to 90 km/h on open roads outside built-up areas, though that mostly concerns motorised traffic rather than your bike. Drivers overtaking cyclists must leave at least 1.5 m of clearance, and if you're riding outside town after dark, lights and a reflective vest are required. The blood alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, so keep that in mind if wine is on the lunch menu before an afternoon ride.
