Aljezur sits on a hillside above the Costa Vicentina, and the best way to feel that geography rather than just look at it is from a saddle. Ride out of town toward Praia da Arrifana and you'll drop through a switchback descent to a cliff-backed surf beach that photographs don't quite capture. Head the other way and the Ribeira de Aljezur opens into Praia da Amoreira, a flat, easy ride along the estuary where river meets ocean. Either route gives you the kind of morning that public transport simply can't offer here.
This is a town built on slopes, with narrow lanes that buses and taxis struggle with, and beaches scattered several kilometres apart with real hills in between. A bike sidesteps the parking chaos that hits Arrifana and Monte Clérigo every summer, and turns the region's quiet farmland and cliff-top roads into the whole point of the trip rather than a hurdle to cross. If you go for an e-bike, the climb back up from the coast stops being the price you pay for a beach day and becomes just another easy stretch of road.
No licence is required for a standard bicycle or a pedal-assist e-bike, and there's no minimum age set by law. A deposit is standard practice, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual rental company. An international driving permit isn't relevant here since bicycles need no licence at all.
Expect to pay EUR 3 to 6 per day for a standard city or mountain bike in low season, rising to EUR 10 to 15 in high season. E-bikes and full-suspension mountain bikes cost roughly double a standard bike, often EUR 20 to 30 per day in peak months.
High season runs June to September, with July and August the busiest and priciest months on the whole Algarve coast — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season, November to March, brings the cheapest rates, though it's worth remembering this stretch of coast stays rideable close to year-round. For the best balance of good weather and thinner crowds, aim for April to June or September to October.
Portugal drives on the right. Cyclists under 16 must wear a helmet by law, though it's sensible at any age on these hilly roads. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though as a cyclist you'll rarely approach either. Drivers overtaking a cyclist must leave at least 1.5 metres of clearance, and if you're riding outside town at night or in poor visibility, lights and a reflective vest are required. The blood alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, so if you're planning a beach day that includes a car later on, pace yourself accordingly.
