Kamloops doesn't announce itself the way postcard cities do — it spreads quietly across two rivers and a ring of dry hillside neighbourhoods, and a scooter is the easiest way to actually get the measure of it. Ride the flat riverside path through Riverside Park in the morning, then climb into Kenna Cartwright Park in the afternoon for a view over the whole valley, and you'll cover more ground than most visitors manage in two days on foot.
This is a city built for two wheels rather than four. Traffic is light enough that a scooter never feels risky, distances between downtown, the riverside trails and the surrounding grasslands are too far to walk but trivial to ride, and the terrain rewards you for moving — flat paths along the water, then a short climb to a viewpoint or a lake road with nothing but sagebrush and hoodoos around you. A car works here too, but it's overkill for a city this size, and parking never earns its keep.
You'll need a full driver's licence — in British Columbia that's a Class 5, and it covers mopeds and limited-speed scooters at 50cc or under; anything larger calls for a motorcycle-class licence. No International Driving Permit is required if your licence is in English. Rental companies typically set their own minimum age, usually around 21, and will take a deposit or a hold on your credit card in your own name before handing over the keys.
Prices move a lot with the season. A standard scooter runs roughly 35–45 CAD per day in peak summer, and larger or premium models can reach 55–70 CAD per day. Outside of summer, rates drop sharply, down toward 7–10 CAD per day in the quietest stretch of low season.
High season runs June through August, when demand and prices both peak — book ahead if you're arriving in midsummer. Low season stretches from November to March, when many operators scale back or close for winter altogether, so scooter rental in Kamloops is really a warm-weather plan. Late spring and early autumn sit comfortably in between, with milder prices and thinner crowds on the trails.
Canada drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for every scooter rider and passenger, no exceptions, and they need to meet an approved safety standard. Speed limits are posted in km/h — typically 50 km/h in town, rising to 80–90 km/h on the rural highways around the city. The legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.08%, but British Columbia hands out immediate roadside penalties from 0.05%, so the safest rule when riding is simply not to drink at all.
