Kamloops doesn't reveal itself from a car window. The real city — dry canyon rims, grassland ridgelines, forestry roads that vanish into the hills — sits well past the pavement, in places like Lac du Bois Grasslands or the Frederick Lake lookouts above Greenstone Mountain. Renting a quad in Kamloops is how you actually get to them: throttle up a dusty switchback, crest a ridge, and suddenly the whole Thompson valley opens up below you. It's the kind of view most visitors never see, simply because they never had the wheels for it.
This is BC's dry interior, and the landscape was practically built for a quad. Trails run steep, loose and unpaved, distances between lakes and viewpoints stretch far beyond a comfortable walk, and a huge network of forestry roads links it all together with almost no traffic to worry about. A scooter or road bike would struggle within a kilometre of gravel; an ATV shrugs it off and keeps climbing. Around here, a quad rental isn't a novelty activity — it's simply the normal way locals and visitors alike reach the backcountry.
Off-road on private land or a designated trail, adults generally don't need a driver's licence at all, though most operators still ask for photo ID. On-road use or crossing a public road is a different story — that requires a valid driver's licence, and international visitors typically don't need an IDP alongside it. Expect a minimum age of 16-18 to ride as a driver, with younger riders allowed only as passengers. A deposit or credit-card hold is standard for the rental, usually taken as a pre-authorisation in your own name, and most guided tour operators handle registration and trail passes for you.
Expect roughly 22-30 CAD per day in low season, rising to 45-70 CAD per day for a standard single-rider quad in high season. Larger-displacement or two-up models run about 90-140 CAD per day.
June through September is high season, when the grasslands are dry, the forestry roads are clear, and every trail on this list is in full swing — book a few days ahead if you're set on a specific weekend. The shoulder months either side, particularly September, offer quieter trails and gentler prices. Once winter arrives, ATV rental all but disappears from the region until spring, so outside the June-September window it's worth checking with us before you plan a trip around it.
Canada drives on the right. Helmets are required nationwide for anyone riding a scooter or motorcycle, and BC extends that rule to quad riders as well. In town, speed limits sit around 50 km/h unless otherwise posted, climbing to 80-90 km/h on the rural highways you'll cross en route to trailheads. The criminal alcohol limit is 0.08%, but BC enforces roadside penalties from as low as 0.05%, so it's simplest to treat riding and drinking as mutually exclusive. Lane splitting isn't permitted anywhere in the country, and that applies to quads on shared roads too.
