Chiang Rai rewards anyone willing to leave the sidewalk. Wind through town toward the White Temple's mirrored spires, catch the deep indigo of the Blue Temple a few minutes later, then keep going until the road climbs into tea-covered hills near Mae Salong. A scooter rental in Chiang Rai turns a scattered list of sights into one easy loop, and lets you slip off the main road whenever something catches your eye.

The city's temples, museums and viewpoints sit close together, but the best of the region — waterfalls, tea plantations, mountain villages — is spread across a wide rural area 20 to 100 km out. Traffic here is light compared to Bangkok or Chiang Mai, and the roads are well paved and gently graded, so an automatic scooter handles both the flat town streets and the hillier stretches toward Mae Salong or Phu Chi Fa without asking much of the rider. It's a far more practical way to string together a full day than relying on tuk-tuks or a rented car.

Top 10 things to see in Chiang Rai by scooter

  1. Wat Rong Khun (White Temple) — the city's most iconic sight, just south on Route 1; go early before the tour buses arrive.
  2. Wat Rong Suea Ten (Blue Temple) — a striking indigo-and-gold temple in town, an easy add-on to the White Temple loop.
  3. Baan Dam Museum (Black House) — Thawan Duchanee's dark, sprawling art compound north of the city, a sharp contrast to the white and blue temples.
  4. Wat Huai Pla Kang (Big Buddha / Guan Yin) — a giant hilltop Guanyin statue with an elevator up to panoramic city views.
  5. Khun Korn Waterfall — a forested trail southeast of town leading to a tall waterfall, a good cool-off stop on a jungle ride.
  6. Singha Park (Boon Rawd Farm) — rolling tea and strawberry fields with roads made for a scenic loop just outside the city.
  7. Golden Triangle (Sop Ruak) — where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet at the Mekong, a classic long day ride north with river viewpoints.
  8. Mae Salong (Santikhiri) — a winding mountain road up to a Yunnanese hill-town of tea plantations, a favourite longer scooter route.
  9. Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong — a riverside hilltop temple in the old town with a free sunset view over the Kok River.
  10. Phu Chi Fa — a dramatic sunrise viewpoint over Laos on a mountain ridge, best tackled by confident riders or with an overnight stay.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Chiang Rai?

Thai law requires a motorcycle-category licence to ride a scooter — either a Thai licence or your home licence paired with an International Driving Permit carrying the motorcycle entitlement. Some shops will hand over the keys without checking, but police checkpoints do check, and insurance is generally void without the right paperwork. Most rentals set a minimum age of 18, and you should expect to leave a deposit — offer cash or a photocopy of your passport rather than the passport itself.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Chiang Rai?

A basic automatic (Honda Click or Scoopy class) runs roughly 150-180 THB/day in low season and 200-300 THB/day in high season, especially for multi-day or weekly bookings. Larger, newer models like the Honda PCX or Yamaha NMAX typically cost 300-500+ THB/day.

  • Prices climb during December-February and around the Songkran holiday in April.
  • They drop from May through October, the rainy low season — though single-day walk-up rates can occasionally beat short multi-day deals.

When to book a rental scooter in Chiang Rai?

November to February is Chiang Rai's cool, dry high season, when demand — and prices — peak, so it's worth booking a few days ahead. May to October brings the southwest monsoon and noticeably cheaper rates, with sudden downpours to plan around. If you're chasing the best combination of good weather and lower prices, the shoulder months just before or after high season are worth a look.

Local traffic rules in Chiang Rai

Thailand drives on the left, so overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger and are enforced with on-the-spot fines. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town and 90 km/h on rural highways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05% — lower, at 0.02%, for under-20s and new licence holders — and roadside checks are common, especially around holidays. Carry your licence, IDP and rental documents at all times, and watch for motorcycles riding the left shoulder or, occasionally, against traffic in town.
