Chiang Rai rewards anyone willing to leave the sidewalk. Wind through town toward the White Temple's mirrored spires, catch the deep indigo of the Blue Temple a few minutes later, then keep going until the road climbs into tea-covered hills near Mae Salong. A scooter rental in Chiang Rai turns a scattered list of sights into one easy loop, and lets you slip off the main road whenever something catches your eye.
The city's temples, museums and viewpoints sit close together, but the best of the region — waterfalls, tea plantations, mountain villages — is spread across a wide rural area 20 to 100 km out. Traffic here is light compared to Bangkok or Chiang Mai, and the roads are well paved and gently graded, so an automatic scooter handles both the flat town streets and the hillier stretches toward Mae Salong or Phu Chi Fa without asking much of the rider. It's a far more practical way to string together a full day than relying on tuk-tuks or a rented car.
Thai law requires a motorcycle-category licence to ride a scooter — either a Thai licence or your home licence paired with an International Driving Permit carrying the motorcycle entitlement. Some shops will hand over the keys without checking, but police checkpoints do check, and insurance is generally void without the right paperwork. Most rentals set a minimum age of 18, and you should expect to leave a deposit — offer cash or a photocopy of your passport rather than the passport itself.
A basic automatic (Honda Click or Scoopy class) runs roughly 150-180 THB/day in low season and 200-300 THB/day in high season, especially for multi-day or weekly bookings. Larger, newer models like the Honda PCX or Yamaha NMAX typically cost 300-500+ THB/day.
November to February is Chiang Rai's cool, dry high season, when demand — and prices — peak, so it's worth booking a few days ahead. May to October brings the southwest monsoon and noticeably cheaper rates, with sudden downpours to plan around. If you're chasing the best combination of good weather and lower prices, the shoulder months just before or after high season are worth a look.
Thailand drives on the left, so overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger and are enforced with on-the-spot fines. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town and 90 km/h on rural highways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05% — lower, at 0.02%, for under-20s and new licence holders — and roadside checks are common, especially around holidays. Carry your licence, IDP and rental documents at all times, and watch for motorcycles riding the left shoulder or, occasionally, against traffic in town.
