Motorcycles provide a completely different perspective of Canberra and its surrounding landscapes. While the city itself is well-planned and easy to navigate, the true joy of riding a motorcycle here lies in the open roads leading out of town. The Canberra region is surrounded by rolling hills, nature reserves, and scenic highways that are perfect for riders who want to explore beyond the city center.
To rent a motorcycle, you must hold a motorcycle license (R class). Some smaller-capacity bikes may be rented with a standard car license, depending on the rental company, but this is less common. International travelers will need an International Driving Permit as well as their original license. A deposit is almost always required.
Motorcycles must be returned with a full fuel tank and in good condition. Helmets are provided, but gloves, jackets, and other protective gear may be rented or purchased separately. Some rental companies allow flexible pick-up and return locations, or even hotel delivery.
Helmets are required by law. Riders should keep headlights on at all times and follow all posted speed limits. Lane filtering is allowed under certain conditions in Australia, but it must be done carefully. Canberra’s roads are wide and generally less congested than Sydney or Melbourne, which makes motorcycle riding a more relaxed experience here.
