Belgrade doesn't reveal itself easily to someone on foot. The city sits where the Sava meets the Danube, and its best sights are strung out along the water rather than packed into one walkable centre. Pedal out from Kalemegdan Fortress along the river and within twenty minutes you can be crossing the Ada Bridge toward the lake at Ada Ciganlija, or following the Danube quay north into old Zemun, where the Gardoš Tower looks out over the water. A bicycle turns a scattered city into one continuous ride.
This is what makes Belgrade suit two wheels so well. Its landmarks cluster along flat, largely car-free promenades — the Sava and Danube quays, the Ada Ciganlija loop, the riverside path through Savamala — stretches that are tedious to cover on foot and awkward to reach by car or public transport, especially once you're crossing into New Belgrade or hopping a ferry to the river islands. The few hills in the centre, around Kalemegdan, Topčider and Košutnjak, are exactly the kind of short, steep climbs a bike handles better than a bus route ever could, letting you string several viewpoints into one loop instead of a day of transfers.
Renting a bicycle in Belgrade doesn't require a licence — it's purely down to the rental agency's own policy, and most simply ask for an ID or passport. There's no legal minimum age either, though some operators set their own. A deposit is usually required, often a small card pre-authorisation, and your passport may be copied or held for the duration of the rental. No International Driving Permit is needed for a bicycle.
Expect around 350 RSD per day for a basic city bike in the off-season, rising to roughly 500–2000 RSD per day for a standard city or trekking bike in peak summer. If you want a premium road or gravel model with a carbon frame, budget up to about 4000 RSD per day.
High season runs June to August, when prices peak and popular models can sell out on short notice, so it's worth booking a few days ahead if you're travelling in midsummer. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices drop and availability is easy, though some operators scale back hours in the coldest months. For the best mix of good weather and manageable prices, aim for May, June, September or early October.
Serbia drives on the right, so keep to the right-hand side of the road and bike lanes where they exist. Cyclists should use lights and reflectors after dark, and a reflective vest is a good idea if you're riding outside the built-up centre at night. Speed limits for other road users are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 80 km/h on open roads, useful to know if you're sharing routes with local traffic. The blood-alcohol limit is effectively zero for anyone operating a vehicle, so it's best to treat it as a no-drinking rule even on a bicycle. Police checks happen from time to time, so it doesn't hurt to carry ID with you on longer rides.
