Praia da Rocha's ochre cliffs glow gold in the late afternoon, and the best way to see them is from the saddle of a scooter, wind in your face, no bus schedule to check. Cross the Arade river and you're in Ferragudo within minutes, wandering whitewashed lanes that most day-trippers never reach. Portimão rewards this kind of freedom — you decide when to stop for a coffee overlooking the marina, and when to keep going.
Portimão's old town and marina roads get tight and congested with tour traffic in high season, and parking a car there is its own headache. A scooter slips through easily and parks for free right where you want to be. It also opens up the wider Algarve as a string of easy half-day loops — Alvor, Silves, even the hills above Monchique — routes that are awkward by bus and expensive by car but effortless on two wheels.
For scooters up to 50cc you need a category AM licence, available from age 16 — a full car (category B) licence covers this too. For 125cc scooters you need an A1 motorcycle entitlement; Portugal's rule allowing local B-licence holders onto 125cc machines applies only to Portuguese licences, not to visitors. Bring an International Driving Permit if your licence isn't from the EU or EEA, and expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the exact amount set by the rental operator.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you're looking at roughly 5–15 EUR per day, rising to 20–40 EUR per day in high season, and up to 45–50 EUR per day for larger-cc or newer e-scooter models.
July and August are peak high season across the Algarve — scooters sell out fast and prices climb, so book well ahead if you're travelling then. From November to March you'll find the cheapest rentals, though April to June and September to October hit the sweet spot: warm, dry, and far less crowded, with prices still reasonable. If you want to rent a scooter in Portimão during summer, reserve a few weeks out rather than turning up hoping for availability.
Portugal drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any moped or scooter. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads, but mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways. Headlights stay on at all times, day and night. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l — checkpoints are common, so plan accordingly if you've had a glass of vinho verde with lunch.
