Setúbal doesn't get the crowds Lisbon does, and that's exactly the point. Pick up a scooter here and within twenty minutes you can be climbing the cliff-top road through Serra da Arrábida, with the Atlantic stretched out turquoise below you, or freewheeling down to the sheltered cove at Praia do Portinho da Arrábida for a swim. This is a place best explored on two wheels, at your own speed, stopping wherever the view demands it.

The old town itself is compact, hilly and cobbled — exactly the kind of place where a car becomes a liability and a scooter just slots into a gap by the kerb. But the real reason to rent a scooter in Setúbal is what surrounds the town: the Arrábida coast, the fishing town of Sesimbra, the hilltop castle at Palmela, and the ferry crossing to the Tróia peninsula are all close by yet slow and awkward to reach on local buses. A scooter turns them into an easy half-day loop.

Top 10 things to see in Setúbal by scooter

  1. Serra da Arrábida (Estrada de Escarpa, N379-1) — a winding cliff-top road through the natural park with sweeping sea views, one of the best rides near Lisbon.
  2. Praia do Portinho da Arrábida — a turquoise cove beach tucked below the Arrábida hills, reached by a scenic descent from the Serra road.
  3. Praia da Figueirinha — an easy, popular beach just outside town, a good first stop for a short ride.
  4. Castelo de São Filipe — a hilltop 16th-century fortress overlooking the city and the Sado estuary, a short climb from the centre.
  5. Convento de Jesus / Igreja de Jesus — a Manueline-style former convent and church in the historic centre.
  6. Tróia Peninsula — take the Setúbal–Tróia ferry across the estuary for a long sandy peninsula, beaches and dolphin-watching.
  7. Sesimbra — a fishing town with its own castle and great seafood, a classic day-trip ride along the coast.
  8. Palmela Castle — a Moorish-origin hilltop castle with panoramic views over the Sado valley, a short ride inland.
  9. José Maria da Fonseca Winery, Azeitão — a historic wine estate, an easy stop for tastings on a countryside loop.
  10. Lagoa de Albufeira — a coastal lagoon and beach further north, good for a longer scenic ride.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Setúbal?

For scooters up to 50cc you need at least category AM, which you can hold from age 16; a full car licence (category B) also covers this. For a 125cc scooter you'll need an A1 motorcycle entitlement — the local rule allowing Portuguese B-licence holders onto 125cc bikes doesn't extend to visitors. Bring your driving licence and, if it isn't from the EU/EEA, an International Driving Permit is recommended. Rental companies will also ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount depending on the vehicle and operator.
