Picture cobbled lanes threading past baroque façades on Piața Mare, the Bridge of Lies waiting at the end of a narrow passage, and mountains rising just beyond the rooftops. Sibiu rewards exactly this kind of wandering, and a scooter lets you slip from the old town's medieval core out to the Saxon villages and forested trails around it in minutes rather than hours. One afternoon you might be climbing the Council Tower for a view over the red roofs; the next you're riding out past Dumbrava Forest toward a hilltop church that's stood since the 1100s.

Sibiu's centre is compact and mostly pedestrian, so a scooter isn't for weaving through the squares themselves — it's for everything just outside them. The open-air ASTRA museum, the shepherd village of Rășinari, the fortified church at Cisnădioara, even the winding road up to Păltiniș, all sit a few to over thirty kilometres from downtown, too far to walk and awkward by local transport. Narrow streets and scarce parking also make a small two-wheeler far easier to manage here than a car, especially once you start exploring the hills around the city.

Top 10 things to see in Sibiu by scooter

  1. Piața Mare (Grand Square) — the city's main square, ringed by baroque façades and the natural starting point for any ride around the old town.
  2. Piața Mică (Small Square) — a cobbled square linking the Lower and Upper Town, with the Bridge of Lies at one end.
  3. Podul Minciunilor (Bridge of Lies) — Romania's first cast-iron bridge, a quick photo-stop between the two main squares.
  4. Turnul Sfatului (Council Tower) — climb it for a rooftop view over the old town before heading out on the bike.
  5. Muzeul Național Brukenthal — one of Romania's oldest art museums, right on Piața Mare, an easy stop before or after a ride.
  6. Muzeul ASTRA (Dumbrava Sibiului) — a large open-air ethnographic museum a few km south of the centre, a proper scooter destination rather than a walk.
  7. Pădurea Dumbrăvii — a forested park with a lake, a popular short ride from downtown for a break from the old town.
  8. Cisnădioara — a small Saxon village around 10 km away with a 12th-century church perched on a hilltop, a classic day-trip route.
  9. Rășinari — a traditional shepherd village at the foot of the mountains, a scenic ride of about 12 km from Sibiu.
  10. Păltiniș — Romania's oldest mountain resort, reached by a winding 35 km climb into the Cindrel Mountains with views back over the city.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Sibiu?

For scooters up to 50cc and 45 km/h, an EU category AM licence is the minimum, though a full car licence (category B) also covers you. If you'd rather ride something bigger, from 125cc up, you'll need the matching motorcycle category. Riders are usually expected to be at least 16, and non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Rental companies typically ask for a deposit as well, held on a card or in cash, so it's worth confirming the amount and refund terms before you sign.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Sibiu?

Prices swing quite a bit across the year. Our own listings start from around 25 RON per day in low season, while a standard scooter through local operators generally runs 60 to 100 RON per day once summer traffic picks up. If you want something with a bigger engine or a newer model, expect 150 RON or more per day.

  • November to March: the quietest and cheapest months, though a few operators pause bookings entirely over winter.
  • July and August: peak demand and the highest prices, as summer tourism fills the old town.
  • May, June and September: a good middle ground, with milder crowds and steadier availability.

When to book a rental scooter in Sibiu?

High season runs June through August, plus a smaller holiday spike in the mountains around Christmas and New Year, so book ahead if you're planning a summer trip. Low season stretches from November to March, when snow and icy roads make riding impractical across much of the country and prices drop accordingly. For the best balance of good weather, open mountain roads and lighter demand, aim for May, June or September.

Local traffic rules in Sibiu

Romania drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for anyone riding a scooter or moped, rider and passenger alike. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads outside towns, with mopeds capped at 45 km/h and kept off motorways. Alcohol tolerance is zero, so don't ride after drinking even a little. Keep your licence, IDP if required, and rental papers on you, since police checks on national roads are routine, and watch for uneven surfaces and stray animals once you're out past the villages.
