Picture swapping cobblestones for open road: one morning you're gliding past the Ferris wheel rising out of the old salt caverns at Salina Turda, and by afternoon you're winding through the limestone walls of Cheile Turzii with the wind doing the work public transport never could. Turda rewards exactly this kind of freedom — a small city with a handful of unforgettable places scattered just far enough apart that walking gets old fast, but never so far that a scooter feels like overkill.
The town centre is easy on foot, but its real highlights sit a few kilometres out on quiet, hilly Transylvanian roads with barely any traffic — ideal territory for two wheels. Public transport here is thin, so a **scooter rental in Turda** lets you stitch the salt mine, the gorge and even a hillside village into one relaxed day, without waiting on a bus timetable or negotiating a car through narrow lanes.
For scooters up to 50cc and 45 km/h, an EU category AM licence is the minimum, and a standard car (B) licence also covers you. Larger scooters, from 125cc up, need the matching motorcycle category. Riders are generally expected to be at least 16 for AM-class machines, though our partner companies may set their own higher minimum. Bring an International Driving Permit if your licence isn't from the EU or EEA, and expect a deposit, usually held as a card pre-authorisation, scaled to the vehicle's value — confirm the exact amount and refund terms before you sign anything.
A basic scooter runs roughly 25–40 RON per day in the quieter months, rising to about 120–200 RON per day at the height of summer. A larger or newer model, such as a Honda SH-class scooter, sits noticeably above these figures year-round.
High season runs June through August, when the gorge trails, the salt mine and Rimetea's viewpoint all draw the biggest crowds — book ahead if you're set on those weeks. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices drop but winter weather makes riding far less appealing across much of Romania. If you can, aim for May, June or September: the roads are dry, traffic is light, and prices sit comfortably below the summer peak.
Romania drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter or moped. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on roads outside built-up areas, rising to 100–130 km/h on expressways and motorways — though scooters are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways at all. Alcohol tolerance is essentially zero, so don't ride after drinking. Carry your licence, IDP if needed, and the rental papers with you, since roadside checks on national roads are routine, and watch for uneven surfaces and stray animals once you leave the main routes.
