Porto rewards anyone willing to leave the tram tracks behind. Hop on a scooter in the Ribeira district and within minutes you can be crossing the Dom Luís I Bridge toward Vila Nova de Gaia, ducking into a Port wine cellar, then chasing the Douro out to where it meets the Atlantic at Foz do Douro. It's the kind of city that opens up completely once you're not waiting for the next bus.

Porto's old town is steep, cobbled and laced with narrow one-way streets — charming to walk for an hour, exhausting to walk all day. A scooter sidesteps the parking headaches of a car while covering the real distances between the historic centre, Gaia's wine lodges and the coastal beaches at Foz and Matosinhos, letting you string together a loop that would otherwise mean several bus transfers.

Top 10 things to see in Porto by scooter

  1. Ribeira district — the riverside old town of colourful houses and cafés, and the natural starting point for most rides along the Douro.
  2. Dom Luís I Bridge (Ponte Luís I) — the double-deck iron bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia, and one of the best photo stops in the city.
  3. Vila Nova de Gaia port wine cellars — cross the river for a tour of a Port wine lodge, an easy hop from Ribeira.
  4. Foz do Douro — where the river meets the Atlantic, with a scenic promenade and plenty of seafood along the way.
  5. Praia de Matosinhos — a lively city beach a short ride north along the coast, with a surf-town feel.
  6. Livraria Lello — the ornately carved bookshop near downtown, usually paired with a stop at Clérigos Tower.
  7. Torre dos Clérigos — a Baroque bell tower with panoramic views over the city, right in the centre.
  8. Palácio da Bolsa — the historic stock exchange palace in Ribeira, home to the striking Arabian Room.
  9. Parque da Cidade do Porto — a broad urban park running all the way to the coast, ideal for a longer scenic loop.
  10. Passeio Marítimo — the coastal road linking Foz, Matosinhos and Leça da Palmeira, Porto's classic Atlantic ride.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Porto?

For a scooter up to 50cc you'll need category AM, which a full car licence (category B) also covers; a 125cc scooter requires an A1 motorcycle entitlement, since the Portuguese rule letting local B-licence holders ride 125cc doesn't extend to visitors. Rental companies set their own minimum age, usually above the legal minimum of 16, and you should expect a deposit held on your credit card. Non-EU visitors are generally asked for an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Porto?

Expect around 5–10 EUR per day in low season and 15–25 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 25–35 EUR per day.

  • Prices climb steadily from spring, peaking June to September.
  • Rates ease off from October, bottoming out November to February.
  • Booking a few days ahead in summer helps you avoid sold-out models.

When to book a rental scooter in Porto?

High season runs June to September, when Porto's summer crowds push prices toward the top of the range and popular models can sell out. Low season, November to February, brings the cheapest rates, though the city's winters are properly wet. If you can, aim for April to June or September to October — mild weather, thinner crowds, and prices that sit comfortably between the two extremes.

Local traffic rules in Porto

Portugal drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads and up to 120 km/h on motorways, though mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways at all. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to 0.2 g/l for anyone who's held a licence less than three years, and roadside checks are routine, so it's not worth the risk.
