Mumbai rewards anyone willing to weave through it rather than sit in it. Pull up to the Gateway of India at sunrise before the crowds arrive, then trace the curve of Marine Drive as the lights come on along the "Queen's Necklace" — a ride that feels like a postcard from the seat of a scooter. Cross the Bandra-Worli Sea Link with the skyline rising out of the water on either side, and you will understand why locals call this city addictive rather than just crowded.

Mumbai is long, narrow and famously congested, with South Mumbai, Bandra, Juhu and the northern suburbs spread far enough apart that walking is impractical and taxis crawl through the same jams everyone else is stuck in. A scooter lets you slip between lanes and cover the coast and the suburbs in a single day. The roads are flat and mostly paved, so an automatic scooter needs no gear-shifting — ideal if you have never ridden in Indian traffic before.

Top 10 things to see in Mumbai by scooter

  1. Gateway of India — the iconic waterfront monument in Colaba, the natural starting point for any ride and the departure point for Elephanta ferries.
  2. Marine Drive — the sweeping bayfront boulevard known as the "Queen's Necklace," best ridden at sunset for the skyline view.
  3. Bandra-Worli Sea Link — ride across, or pull over at the Worli or Bandra end, for dramatic sea-bridge views of the city.
  4. Haji Ali Dargah — a mosque-shrine on a tidal islet reached by a causeway, a striking approach at low tide.
  5. Juhu Beach — a popular beach strip with street food stalls along a relaxed stretch of Juhu Tara Road.
  6. Bandstand Promenade — a seafront walk past old Portuguese fort ruins and Bandra's celebrity bungalows.
  7. Sanjay Gandhi National Park — a forested park at the city's edge with winding roads, a welcome break from traffic.
  8. Kanheri Caves — ancient rock-cut Buddhist caves inside the national park, reached via a scenic internal road.
  9. Powai Lake — an artificial lake ringed by a promenade, a good short evening ride away from the coastal crowds.
  10. Aksa Beach — a quieter beach near Malad on the western coast, worth the longer ride out of central Mumbai.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Mumbai?

To rent a scooter in Mumbai you will need your home motorcycle or scooter licence together with an International Driving Permit, since India legally requires a licence class covering gearless two-wheelers — though tourist-area shops often check this loosely. The general minimum age is 18. Expect to leave a deposit in cash or as a card hold; some shops will ask for your passport as security, but you can usually offer cash or a photocopy instead.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Mumbai?

A standard automatic scooter, such as a Honda Activa or similar 110cc model, runs 450–600 INR per day in low season and 700–1000 INR per day in high season. Larger-cc or newer models cost more.

  • Premium scooters and larger motorcycles: 1000–1800 INR per day.
  • Prices climb from October through March, when tourist demand is highest.
  • They drop from June through September, during the monsoon, when demand is lowest.

When to book a rental scooter in Mumbai?

October to March is high season, dry and cool, with December and early January the busiest and priciest stretch — book ahead if you are travelling then. June to September is monsoon season: rentals are cheapest, but heavy rain and flooded streets make riding genuinely more demanding, so it suits confident riders more than first-timers.

Local traffic rules in Mumbai

India drives on the left, and overtaking happens on the right. Helmets are mandatory nationwide for both rider and passenger. All two-wheelers made since 2017 have automatic daytime headlights with no off switch, so riding lit during the day is completely normal. The permitted blood alcohol limit is just 0.03%, effectively zero, so leave the scooter parked if you have been drinking. Speed limits vary by road and state rather than following one national number, so stick to posted signs. If you want to rent a scooter in Mumbai, use the search form at the top of the page.
