Mumbai rarely lets you move at your own pace — unless you're on two wheels close to the sea. Picture an early ride down Marine Drive as the city wakes up, the Back Bay curve stretching out flat and wide in front of you, or a quiet loop around Powai Lake while the rest of the suburb is still asleep. A bicycle gets you to these moments without waiting for a taxi that may never show up.
Mumbai's traffic is famously relentless, and a bicycle isn't built to fight it across the whole city — it's built for the parts that reward slow travel. Waterfront promenades like Worli Sea Face and Bandstand-Carter Road, plus green pockets like Sanjay Gandhi National Park, are made for a bike, letting you cover South Mumbai's sights or a suburban park loop on your own schedule, car-free.
Renting a bicycle in India requires no licence, no registration and no minimum age. A deposit is usually asked for, in cash or as a card hold — amounts vary by shop and by bike, so ask before you book. No International Driving Permit is needed for a bicycle; that only applies if you're renting a scooter or motorcycle instead.
Average rental price is around INR 250–350 per day during low season and INR 350–550 during high season. A geared, hybrid or e-bike typically runs INR 600–900 per day.
November to February is high season — dry, cooler weather and the best riding conditions of the year, so it's worth booking your bicycle rental in Mumbai a little ahead if you're travelling in December or January. June to September is low season: the monsoon brings heavy rain and flooded streets, which keeps prices down but also makes riding genuinely risky, so it's better treated as a season to avoid than a bargain window. October to March is generally the best stretch for comfortable riding.
India drives on the left, so keep to the left and overtake on the right. Helmets aren't required by law for bicycles, though it's sensible to wear one given Mumbai's traffic density. There's no fixed speed limit for cyclists, but roads are shared with buses, auto-rickshaws and constant horn use — treat the horn as communication, not aggression, and ride defensively. Alcohol limits and licence rules that apply to scooters and motorcycles don't apply to bicycles, but common sense still does: stick to daylight hours and the promenades and parks where traffic thins out.
