Garbsen sits so close to Hannover that renting a car for it would feel like overkill — what this town really rewards is a scooter and an afternoon with nowhere fixed to be. Head out to Blauer See for a swim off the 600m sandy beach and its 65m water slide, then loop past the brick towers of Kloster Marienwerder, a 13th-century Gothic monastery that looks like it wandered out of a fairy tale. On a scooter you catch both without ever hunting for parking.
Garbsen is built for this kind of riding. It's a low-density satellite town with wide streets, flat terrain, and plenty of dedicated bike and moped infrastructure, so a small scooter gets you around far more comfortably than a car ever would. The local sights are scattered rather than clustered, and a scooter closes those gaps in minutes. It also opens up longer trips — into central Hannover, or out to the wide waters of Steinhuder Meer — without a single transit transfer or parking search.
For a standard 50cc scooter capped at 45 km/h, you need class AM, with a minimum age of 15. If you hold a German or EU car licence, AM is already included, so most car-licence holders can rent without anything extra. Visitors from outside the EU should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Rental companies also ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card in the main driver's name, with the amount depending on the machine.
Average rental prices run from EUR 5–9 per day in low season up to EUR 9–15 per day in high season, with premium models reaching EUR 18–20 per day.
High season runs from May to September, with July and August the tightest weeks to find availability, so it's worth booking ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices drop and fleets thin out. For the best mix of mild weather, long daylight and lighter traffic, aim for late May, June, or September.
Germany drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter or moped, and there's no exception for short trips. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h on roads outside them, though your scooter is capped at 45 km/h by construction anyway. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero if you're under 21 or still within your first two years of holding a licence. Ride with your headlight on at all times — it's required, day and night — and at unmarked junctions, remember that traffic from the right has priority.
