Nuremberg's old town rewards anyone willing to move at their own pace, and a scooter is the easiest way to do that. Ride up toward Nuremberg Castle (Kaiserburg) for a rooftop view over red tiles and church spires, then coast down to the Hauptmarkt, where the gilded Schöner Brunnen rises above the market stalls. Along the way you'll pass half-timbered houses, stone bridges over the Pegnitz, and streets that feel untouched by the centuries — the kind of detail you miss when you're stuck following a tour group or waiting on a tram.
The old town is compact, mostly pedestrianized and paved in cobblestones, which makes a scooter far more practical than a car and much faster than walking when you're trying to see the castle, the churches and the main squares in one day. It also opens up the parts of Nuremberg tourists rarely reach on foot: the zoo on the eastern edge, or the vast former rally grounds to the southeast, are both a short, flat ride away rather than a long trek.
For a 50cc scooter you need a class AM licence, and the good news is that a German or EU car licence already includes it — so most car-licence holders can rent without any extra paperwork. The minimum age is 15 under German law, though rental companies here usually set their own floor, often 18. If you're travelling from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit alongside your national licence. Expect to leave a deposit, normally held on a credit card in the main driver's name.
Average rental prices for a standard **scooter rental in Nuremberg** run from EUR 5-8 per day in low season up to EUR 10-15 per day in high season, with premium models reaching EUR 15-20 per day.
High season runs May to September, busiest in summer, so if you want to rent a scooter in Nuremberg for a July or August trip, book ahead. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices drop and availability is easier to come by. For the best balance of mild weather and lighter demand, late May, June, and September are hard to beat.
Germany drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every scooter rider and passenger, no exceptions. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h on roads outside them, though a 50cc scooter is capped at 45 km/h by design anyway. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for scooter riders, dropping to zero if you're under 21 or still in your first two years of holding a licence. Ride with your headlight on at all times, and remember that at unmarked junctions, traffic coming from the right has priority.
