Skip the trams, skip the long waits at the bus stop — Frankfurt am Main is a city built for two wheels. Rev out of the Altstadt past the Römerberg, cross the Main on the Eiserner Steg for a quick skyline photo, then follow the river down to the Museumsufer before the streets fill up with commuters. A scooter gets you between the old town, the riverbank and Sachsenhausen faster than you'd think possible, with none of the parking headaches that slow down cars in the centre.

Frankfurt's compact core, its flat riverside promenades and its cluster of skyscrapers make it an easy city to ride. The Altstadt's narrow lanes and the tram-heavy streets around the centre can be frustrating on foot or in a car, but a scooter slips through both, and the mostly level ground along the Main means you don't need to be an experienced rider to enjoy it. If you want to rent a scooter in Frankfurt, this is exactly the kind of city where it pays off.

Top 10 things to see in Frankfurt am Main by scooter

  1. Römerberg & Römer (Altstadt) — the historic city-hall square and reconstructed old town, the natural starting point for any ride into the centre.
  2. Eiserner Steg — the iconic pedestrian bridge over the Main, worth a quick stop for the skyline view.
  3. Museumsufer (Schaumainkai) — a riverside promenade lined with museums, flat and scenic for an easy ride.
  4. Palmengarten — Frankfurt's botanical garden, a good spot to slow down and take a break.
  5. Frankfurt Cathedral (Kaiserdom St. Bartholomäus) — the Gothic tower that anchors the old town, worth the short detour.
  6. Main Tower — a skyscraper with a public observation deck, a good place to end the day before heading back.
  7. Grüneburgpark — a large park near Westend, popular for a scenic loop away from traffic.
  8. Frankfurt Zoo — a well-known city zoo and an easy family-friendly stop.
  9. Alte Brücke — the oldest bridge crossing in the city, linking the Altstadt to Sachsenhausen with river views.
  10. Städel Museum — a leading art museum on the Sachsenhausen bank, part of the Museumsufer route.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Frankfurt am Main?

For scooters up to 50cc and 45 km/h you need a class AM licence, and the minimum age is 15. If you already hold a German or EU car licence (class B), AM is included automatically, so most car-licence holders can rent without anything extra. Visitors from outside the EU should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Rental companies will also ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card in the main driver's name, with the amount depending on the machine.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Frankfurt am Main?

Average scooter rental in Frankfurt costs around 10 EUR per day in low season and 18–25 EUR per day in high season. Higher-end or larger-engine models run 25–35 EUR per day.

  • Cheapest from November to February, once winter sets in.
  • Prices climb from June through August, and again during major trade fairs like the Frankfurt Motor Show and the Buchmesse.

When to book a rental scooter in Frankfurt am Main?

High season runs May to September, with July and August the busiest thanks to school holidays — book ahead if you want a specific model. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices drop and many operators run smaller fleets. If you can, aim for late May, June or September: mild weather, long daylight, and lighter traffic than in the middle of summer.

Germany drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter or moped.
