Bucharest doesn't reveal itself from a bus window. The real city — the one with wide boulevards suddenly giving way to cobbled lanes, communist monuments standing across from Belle Époque façades — is best met on two wheels. Picture an easy loop around Herăstrău Lake with the wind doing the work, or a quick dash down Calea Victoriei before parking up to wander Lipscani on foot. That's the kind of afternoon a scooter buys you here.
This is a city built on scale: the Palace of the Parliament sits at the end of boulevards so broad they were designed for parades, not pedestrians, and the distance between sights can stretch further than it looks on a map. Roads are mostly flat and traffic moves fast but predictably along the main arteries, so a scooter turns a slog into a short, breezy ride — and finding a parking spot near the Old Town is a matter of seconds, not the small ordeal it is for a car.
For a standard 50cc scooter you'll need at least an EU category AM licence — a full car licence (category B) covers this too. Larger scooters from 125cc up call for the matching motorcycle category. If your licence isn't from the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with it. Rental shops will usually ask for a deposit, held as a card pre-authorisation or in cash, so it's worth confirming the amount and refund terms before you sign anything.
Prices swing quite a bit with the season. Our listing price starts around 25 RON per day in low season, rising to roughly 45-70 RON per day in high season, with larger or newer models running about 90-120 RON per day.
June through August is high season, when the city fills up with visitors and prices climb toward that 45-70 RON per day range — booking ahead pays off here. Things quiet down from November to March, and that's when you'll find the softer, roughly 25 RON per day rates. If you'd rather skip both crowds and cold, May-June or September into early October give you warm, dry days without the peak-summer premium.
Romania drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter or moped — no exceptions. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside towns, and up to 100-130 km/h on expressways and motorways, though mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways at all. Alcohol tolerance is zero — even a trace in your blood can mean a fine or worse — so keep the rides sober. Keep your licence, IDP if needed, and rental papers on you, since checks on national roads are routine.
