Picture gliding past the Brandenburg Gate at golden hour, then cutting along the Spree toward the graffiti-covered East Side Gallery before anyone else has finished their coffee. That's the kind of morning a scooter buys you in Berlin. You set the pace, you choose the detours, and you get to the places most visitors only see from a tour bus window.
Berlin was practically built for two wheels. The city is flat, the bike lanes are wide and well marked, and the distances between Mitte, Kreuzberg and Charlottenburg are just long enough to make walking tiresome and public transport transfers a hassle. A scooter closes that gap without the bulk of a car, which matters in neighbourhoods with cobblestones and narrow side streets. Car-free stretches like Tempelhofer Feld and the canal path through Kreuzberg only add to the appeal — open space to ride at your own rhythm, something a train simply can't offer.
For a 50cc scooter capped at 45 km/h, you'll need a class AM licence, and if you already hold a German or EU car licence (class B), AM is automatically included — no extra test needed. The legal minimum age is 15, though most rental companies set their own floor, typically 18. Non-EU visitors generally need an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect a deposit as well, usually held on a credit card in the main rider's name; the exact amount depends on the machine and the operator.
Average rates run about 5-15 EUR per day in low season, climbing to 20-35 EUR per day in high season. Premium models go for 30-45 EUR per day.
High season runs May through September, with July and August the busiest thanks to school holidays — book your scooter well in advance if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices drop and the streets are quieter. If you want the sweet spot, late May to June or September brings mild weather, long daylight hours and lighter traffic than peak summer, all at a friendlier price.
Germany drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any moped or scooter — there's no exception. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h outside them, though your scooter's own top speed of 45 km/h will usually be the limiting factor. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for regular riders, dropping to zero if you're under 21 or still in your first two years with a licence. Ride with your headlight on at all times, and remember that at unmarked junctions, traffic coming from the right has priority.
