Santiago's real riding country doesn't start in the city — it starts about an hour southeast, where the road climbs into the Cajón del Maipo and the pavement runs out. This is where a **quad bike** earns its keep: dirt switchbacks above the río Maipo, the turquoise water of Embalse El Yeso catching the light, the road ending at the hot springs of Baños Morales. If you want to rent a quad bike in Santiago, this canyon is the reason.
Santiago itself is a grid built for cars and metro, not for off-road exploring, but the Andes start almost the moment you leave it. The Cajón del Maipo is a corridor of gravel roads, river crossings and narrow mountain tracks that a scooter or a rental car simply can't handle well. A quad bike is built exactly for this kind of terrain, and it covers the canyon's long point-to-point distances between viewpoints, springs and glaciers far faster than you could on foot.
For off-road and guided circuits, most operators simply ask for an adult with a valid driving licence of some kind. If you plan to ride a road-registered quad on public roads, the vehicle needs to be registered and you'll need the right licence class, so check this with the rental company directly, since most tourist quad hire in Chile stays off-road. Expect a minimum age around 18, sometimes higher depending on the operator, plus a deposit held or pre-authorised on a credit card in your own name — avoid handing over cash or your passport as a deposit. An International Driving Permit isn't legally required, but it's worth carrying just in case.
Average rental prices run around 15,000–18,000 CLP per day in low season and 25,000–32,000 CLP per day in high season, with larger or newer models reaching 35,000–45,000 CLP per day.
December through February is high season, driven by the Chilean summer and school holidays — book ahead if you want a good choice of vehicle. June to August is low season with the best prices, but check road conditions higher up the canyon before you go. September to May is generally the most reliable stretch for riding around Santiago and the Cajón del Maipo.
Chile drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for riders, and speed limits sit around 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h near schools, with higher limits on rural roads outside the city. Alcohol limits are strict and tiered, so the practical rule on a quad bike is zero drinks before riding.
