Santiago sits in a bowl ringed by the Andes, and on two wheels that geography stops being scenery and starts being a route. Ride out through the Cajón del Maipo and the canyon walls close in around you as the road climbs toward the turquoise waters of Embalse El Yeso. Head the other way and the switchbacks of the Farellones road twist up toward the ski resorts, snow-capped peaks appearing at every hairpin. Few cities put mountains this dramatic within reach of a single afternoon.
Santiago's downtown grid was not built for the number of cars now on it, and parking near the centre is scarce and expensive. A motorcycle or scooter slips through that congestion and never has to circle a block looking for a space. Because the Andes are visible from almost anywhere in the city, a rented bike also turns a one-hour ride into a mountain pass, a canyon, or a ski road — trips a bus or metro simply can't offer.
Chile requires a Class C motorcycle licence for any engine-powered two-wheeler on public roads — a car licence alone won't do. Rental companies commonly ask riders to be a little older than the legal minimum of 18, and a deposit is usually held or pre-authorised on a credit card in your own name; be wary of any shop that asks to hold your passport instead. Chile lets visitors ride on a valid foreign licence, but carrying an International Driving Permit is a sensible extra precaution.
Expect to pay around 24,000–28,000 CLP per day in low season, rising to roughly 35,000–45,000 CLP per day in high season. Larger-displacement or touring bikes run higher, from about 60,000 CLP per day upward.
December, January and February are high season, driven by summer holidays and heavy tourist demand — book ahead if you're travelling then. June, July and August are low season, with the best prices and easiest availability, though the mountain passes above the city can be colder. For a good balance of price and weather, the shoulder months of September to November and March to April work well around Santiago.
Chile drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for riders and passengers on any motorcycle or scooter, and motorcycles must ride with their headlight on at all times, day and night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h near schools, around 100 km/h on rural roads, and up to 120 km/h on motorways. Lane splitting is not permitted. Alcohol limits are strict and tiered, so the safest approach for riders is simply not to drink before getting on the bike.
