Santiago rewards anyone willing to trade the metro for two wheels. Ride the ciclovías east from the old town and within an hour you can be gliding past flamingos on the lagoon paths of Parque Bicentenario, or grinding up the switchbacks of Cerro San Cristóbal to stand under the city's giant Virgin statue with the Andes as a backdrop. Coast back down through Barrio Bellavista for murals and empanadas, and the whole day feels like something a local would plan, not a tour bus.

What makes this work is Santiago's geography: the stretch from downtown out to Providencia and Las Condes is almost entirely flat, and a growing network of dedicated bike lanes now links the historic center to the business district. On a bike you can outrun the traffic and the metro queues alike, weaving between neighbourhoods that would otherwise mean three separate trips. Stick to the marked ciclovías on the busier avenues, since Santiago's smog and heavy arterial traffic are real, but once you're on the riverside paths it's some of the easiest urban cycling in South America.

Top 10 things to see in Santiago by bike

  1. Cerro San Cristóbal / Parque Metropolitano — the city's signature climb, with a paved switchback road and a cyclist-only ascent up to the summit viewpoint.
  2. Parque Bicentenario — flat lagoon-side paths through Vitacura, past flamingos and embassy row, ideal for an easy scenic spin.
  3. Barrio Bellavista — the bohemian nightlife district at San Cristóbal's foot, full of murals, bars and La Chascona, Pablo Neruda's house.
  4. Barrio Lastarria — cobblestone lanes, cafés and the GAM cultural center, a natural stop between downtown and Parque Forestal.
  5. Parque Forestal — a shaded ride along the Mapocho linking Bellas Artes to the old town, one of the city's main bike corridors.
  6. Plaza de Armas — Santiago's historic core, ringed by the Cathedral and colonial buildings, a fitting endpoint downtown.
  7. Mercado Central — the 19th-century iron-frame seafood market, just minutes from Plaza de Armas.
  8. Parque de las Esculturas — a quieter riverside sculpture park in Providencia, part of the east-west route through the city.
  9. Costanera Center / Sanhattan — Santiago's modern skyline, with a lookout deck atop the Gran Torre reachable from Providencia.
  10. Parque Araucano — a landscaped park in Las Condes with a lake and cycling loop, a good turnaround point for a ride into the business district.

What do you need to rent a bike in Santiago?

Chilean law sets no licence, registration or minimum age for cycling, so renting a bike is refreshingly simple — no driving licence, no IDP. Rental shops will ask for photo ID and usually set their own minimum age, and most will hold a deposit, typically pre-authorised on a credit card in your name; if a smaller shop asks to hold your passport instead, it's fine to decline and offer a card deposit.

How much does it cost to rent a bike in Santiago?

Prices move a lot with the season. A standard city bike runs around 3,000 CLP per day in winter, and 6,000–9,000 CLP per day in high summer; e-bikes and higher-end mountain or road bikes run roughly 10,000–15,000 CLP per day year-round.

  • Cheapest: June to August, Chile's winter and the low season for tourism.
  • Priciest: December to February, the southern-hemisphere summer and peak holiday season.

When to book a rental bike in Santiago?

If you want the lowest prices and no crowds, aim for June to August — just expect cooler, greyer days. December through February is high season, when Santiago's own summer holidays push demand and prices up, so book ahead if you're travelling then. Spring and autumn shoulder months offer a solid middle ground of mild weather and easier availability.

Local traffic rules in Santiago

Chile drives on the right. Cyclists here must wear a helmet on the roadway and use lights and reflectors after dark, a rule enforced more strictly than in most of the region, and drivers are legally required to leave about 1.5 m when overtaking a bike. Use the bike lane wherever one exists — Santiago's ciclovías are extensive but patchy. Urban speed limits sit at 50 km/h, dropping to 30 km/h near schools and on shared streets, and alcohol limits are strict, so treat the road the same as you would behind a wheel: zero drinks before riding.

Which insurance is provided with my rental bicycle?

Some include simple loss or damage protection in the price, while others cover it through your deposit; always check the exact terms on the booking page before you confirm.
