Osorno doesn't feel like a place you tour on foot. It's small enough to cross in an afternoon and flat enough that a bike beats waiting for a bus, and within twenty minutes of easy pedaling you can go from the Catedral San Mateo Apóstol on the Plaza de Armas to the old Spanish walls of the Fuerte Reina María Cristina above the Rahue river. Ride here and you get the compact German-colonial downtown, a riverside path, and a green escape route out to Parque Chuyaca, all without ever needing a bus timetable.
This is a city built at bicycle scale. The historic center, the river and the parks all sit within a few kilometers of each other, so a bike gets you between them faster than walking and with none of the waiting that comes with local buses. It also puts you within reach of the roads east toward the Lake District — a short ride out of town is enough to feel the countryside start, before the terrain turns into a longer day trip for stronger legs.
Chilean law sets no licence, registration or minimum age for riding a bicycle, so there's no driving licence to worry about and no IDP to bring along. Rental shops set their own rules, though, and will normally ask for a photo ID and a small deposit before handing over the bike.
Prices move with the tourist season, and Osorno is no exception.
January and February are the busiest months, when Chilean summer holidays send visitors flooding into the Lake District and prices climb accordingly. May through August, the southern winter, is quieter and rainier, and that's when rentals are cheapest and easiest to find. If you're planning around the Pilmaiquén falls or Lago Puyehue, book a little ahead for the summer window and expect a calmer, cheaper ride in the off months.
Chile drives on the right, and cyclists are required by law to wear a helmet on the roadway, along with lights and reflective gear once it gets dark — rules that are actually enforced here, unlike in much of the region. Drivers must leave about 1.5 m when passing a cyclist, and where a bike lane exists you're expected to use it. Built-up areas are capped at 50 km/h, dropping to 30 km/h near schools and on shared residential streets, so traffic around the center stays manageable for riders. Alcohol limits are strict and tiered, so the simplest rule on two wheels is the same one that applies everywhere in Chile: don't drink and ride.
