Toulouse rewards anyone willing to explore beyond the tram lines, and the fastest way to do that is on two wheels. Picture pulling up right at Place du Capitole at golden hour, then crossing the Pont Neuf as the low sun turns the old bridge and the riverbanks the same warm pink as the brick facades behind you. That colour is why locals call it la Ville Rose, and it looks best from a saddle, not a tour bus window.
The historic centre is a maze of narrow, one-way streets where cars crawl and parking is scarce and pricey, so a motorcycle gets you from the Capitole to the Garonne quays in minutes and parks for free almost anywhere. The city itself is flat, and the Canal du Midi towpath gives you a shaded, traffic-free ride whenever you want a breather from the streets. Once you're warmed up, the open roads toward Albi or the Pyrenees foothills reward a rider ready to go further for the day.
The licence you need depends on the machine. Bikes up to 125cc call for an A1 licence (from age 16), or a category B car licence held at least two years plus a short mandatory training course. Larger, unrestricted motorcycles generally require an A2 licence held for two years followed by extra training. Rental agencies in Toulouse often set their own minimum age, commonly 21 and sometimes higher for bigger machines. A deposit is standard, usually held as a card pre-authorisation and refunded on undamaged return — confirm the exact amount and insurance excess with your chosen agency before booking. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence.
Expect around 25 EUR per day in low season, rising to 40-55 EUR in high season, with premium models running 60-90 EUR per day.
High season runs June through August, peaking hard in late July and August when the whole of France is on holiday, so book well ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with quieter roads and better rates. If you can time it, May, June and September hit the sweet spot: warm weather, long days, and noticeably lighter traffic and prices than the height of summer.
France drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a motorised two-wheeler, and CE-approved gloves are legally required too — France enforces this more strictly than most countries. Dipped headlights stay on at all times, day and night. Speed limits are generally 50 km/h in town, 80 km/h on rural two-way roads outside built-up areas, and 110 km/h on dual carriageways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to effectively zero for riders still in their first three years of licence.
