Sofia is a city that hands you the mountains before you've even left downtown. Head south from the National Palace of Culture and within twenty minutes the traffic thins into hairpins climbing toward Aleko, where alpine meadows and a cable-car station wait above the noise. It's the kind of ride that makes a **motorcycle rental in Sofia** feel less like a convenience and more like the whole point of the trip — the city opens up fast once you're on two wheels, and places like Boyana or the Rila range stop being day-trip fantasies and become genuinely reachable.
Central Sofia itself is compact and easy to cover on foot, but the appeal here is everything around it. The city sits ringed by mountains, with long, scenic distances to places like Plovdiv or Koprivshtitsa that are slow and clumsy by public transport and honestly not much better by car once you hit weekend traffic. A **scooter or motorcycle rental in Sofia** cuts straight through the center, then lets you disappear into the curvy, lightly trafficked roads of Vitosha and beyond — roads that reward two wheels over four, especially on the mountain passes and gorges further south.
For a 50cc moped, the EU AM category is enough, available from age 16 in Bulgaria. Anything from 125cc up requires a motorcycle licence — A1 or higher, matched to the engine size. Rental companies almost always set their own minimum age too, typically 18 to 21, and may ask for extra time held on the licence before handing over a bigger machine. Bring an International Driving Permit if your licence isn't from the EU. A deposit is standard, either in cash or as a card pre-authorisation; if a company asks to hold your passport as security, you can usually offer a larger cash deposit instead.
Expect roughly 25–35 EUR per day in low season and 40–60 EUR per day in high season, with larger-displacement or premium touring bikes running 70–100+ EUR per day.
High season runs July and August, driven mostly by demand on the Black Sea coast, and this is when Sofia rentals also get tight and pricier. Low season stretches from November to March, when coastal rental largely disappears and prices in the capital drop accordingly. For the best combination of good weather, light traffic and fair prices, aim for May, June or September into early October — warm and dry, without the midsummer crowds or heat.
Bulgaria drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike, and enforcement is active, so don't expect to skip one — rental prices normally include them anyway. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on open roads, 120 km/h on expressways and 140 km/h on motorways, while mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and barred from motorways. Motorcycles must run with dipped headlights on at all times. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, and penalties escalate sharply above 1.2 g/l. Away from the main corridors, mountain and village roads can be rough, with potholes and the occasional stray dog to watch for.

Most providers include basic third-party liability insurance in the rental price, with options to upgrade to fuller coverage that reduces or removes your deposit liability in case of damage or theft. Always confirm exactly what is and isn’t covered before you set off.
When you make an online motorbike reservation you can also order the following extra services and equipment: integral helmet, GPS navigation, intercom, unlimited mileage, top case, side cases, boots, jacket, gloves, individual guide or tour, map, full insurance, one-way rental, or delivery to your chosen address.
Most of our motorcycle rental providers have years of experience and will equip you with a well-maintained bike, helmet and insurance for the ride ahead. The number of companies we work with is increasing every day, so if you want to rent a motorcycle locally, just use the search form at the top of the page. Have a nice trip!
