Dahab has a rhythm you can only catch on two wheels: the Red Sea on one side, the Sinai mountains on the other, and a single coast road stitching it all together. Rent a motorcycle in Dahab and the morning can start with a coffee on the Mashraba promenade, dip into the reef at the Blue Hole before the day-trippers arrive, and end with the desert going gold on the road to Nuweiba. Nothing here is more than an hour's ride away, and every stop is better reached under your own steam.
This is a town built for a bike, not a car. The centre is compact and low-traffic, the main sights are strung along one coastal road, and several of the best spots — Ras Abu Galum, the Coloured Canyon — sit at the end of sandy, rutted spurs that a light, maneuverable motorcycle shrugs off far more easily than a rental sedan. Parking is a non-issue: pull up, lock up, walk to the water.
You'll need a valid motorcycle-category licence from home plus an International Driving Permit — some small resort shops will hand over the keys against a passport alone, but that doesn't make you legally covered if something goes wrong. Riders are generally expected to be at least 18. A deposit is standard; ask to pay cash or leave a photocopy of your passport rather than the document itself, since checkpoints along the Sinai roads mean you'll want your ID on you.
Expect roughly 600–800 EGP a day in low season, rising to 900–1300 EGP in high season, and 1300 EGP or more for a bigger or newer bike.
December to February is high season and the priciest stretch, so book ahead if you're travelling then. June to August is low season — cheaper rentals, but also the fiercest desert heat, so ride early or late in the day. November to March generally offers the most comfortable riding weather along with reasonable prices.
Egypt drives on the right, and a helmet is legally required for any motorcycle rider — wear it regardless of how loosely that's enforced outside the cities. Speed limits run around 60 km/h in town and up to 100–120 km/h on the open desert highways. Alcohol and riding don't mix here: the law treats drink-driving as effective zero tolerance, so don't ride after drinking at all. Carry your passport, licence and IDP, as checkpoints are common on the roads in and out of Sinai.
