Bogotá is a city that rewards anyone willing to get off the bus. Ride up toward Monserrate in the morning and you'll catch the whole savanna spread out below before the clouds roll in, then head east on the road to La Calera, where the mountains open up and the miradors along the way are the kind of stop most tourists never make time for. On two wheels, both are an afternoon, not an expedition.

Bogotá's streets were not built with cars in mind, and pico y placa restrictions only make that worse for anyone stuck behind the wheel. A motorcycle slips through where cars queue, and once you're clear of the center, the roads north and east climb fast into páramo and pine forest — paved, scenic, and made for a day trip. The altitude and the cool, changeable weather mean you'll want proper gear, but that's a small price for how quickly the city gives way to open country.

Top 10 things to see in Bogotá by motorcycle

  1. Cerro de Monserrate — ride the winding road to the base and take in the viewpoint over the whole city from the top.
  2. La Calera — a short run east into the hills, with mirador stops and mountain roads local riders favor.
  3. Chingaza National Natural Park — reached via the La Calera road, with páramo landscapes and high-altitude lakes.
  4. Embalse de Tominé — a reservoir north of the city, popular with weekend riders for its lakeside road and views.
  5. Guatavita and Laguna de Guatavita — a classic day ride combining a colonial-style lake town with the sacred El Dorado lagoon.
  6. Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral — an underground cathedral built inside a salt mine, north of Bogotá.
  7. La Candelaria — the historic center, with cobblestone streets, museums and Plaza de Bolívar, best parked and explored on foot.
  8. Usaquén — a leafy northern neighborhood with a Sunday flea market and a colonial plaza.
  9. Suba hills viewpoints — lesser-known local miradors over the Bogotá savanna, just a short ride into the hills.
  10. Sesquilé and Parque Jaime Duque — often combined with the Guatavita and Tominé loop for a longer day out.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Bogotá?

Most rental scooters and motorcycles in Bogotá run 100–125cc, which means you'll need a motorcycle licence — a category A1 covers machines up to 125cc, A2 for anything above. A car licence on its own usually won't be accepted. Foreign licences with a motorcycle entitlement are normally fine for a tourist stay, though carrying an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence is the safer bet. Riders need to be at least 18, though some rental companies set the minimum higher depending on the machine. Expect to leave a deposit, usually as cash or a hold on your card, along with your passport or ID.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Bogotá?

A standard 125–250cc bike runs around 110,000–120,000 COP per day in low season, climbing to 150,000–200,000 COP per day when demand picks up. If you want something bigger — a touring or adventure bike — plan on 250,000–400,000+ COP per day.

  • December–January and July are the priciest months, driven by holiday travel.
  • February–March and September–October are the cheapest, with lighter tourist demand.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Bogotá?

High season runs December–January, Holy Week, and June–August, so book ahead if you're arriving then. Low season falls in April–May and October–November, when prices ease and availability is easier to come by. December through March is generally the best window for riding, with a second good stretch in July–August — Bogotá's weather depends more on altitude than month, but rain is heavier in the shoulder seasons, and mountain roads can get slippery, so plan around the drier spells where you can.

Local traffic rules in Bogotá

Colombia drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and motorcycles must ride with headlights on at all times, day or night. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h on most city streets, dropping to 30 km/h near schools and residential areas, with rural roads generally at 80 km/h. Alcohol limits are strict — effectively zero tolerance — so it's best not to drink at all before riding. Keep your licence, SOAT insurance and vehicle documents on hand, since checkpoints on roads out of the city are routine.
