Bogotá doesn't hide its mountains — they ring the whole savanna, and the moment you point a quad bike rental in Bogotá east or north of the city, the traffic and high-rises fall away fast. Within an hour you can be climbing the switchbacks toward La Calera with the entire city spread out below, or bouncing along the shoreline of the Tominé reservoir with nothing but pine trees and open water around you. This is a landscape built for open-air riding, not for walking or waiting on a bus.

Bogotá itself sits at nearly 2,600 metres, wrapped by mountains, lakes and páramo that stay just out of reach for anyone stuck on foot or public transport. The good scenery here isn't downtown — it's on the rural roads and unpaved tracks 40 to 90 minutes outside the city, exactly where a quad earns its keep. Traffic and altitude make a quad impractical inside Bogotá proper, but on the savanna's winding roads it turns a string of small towns, lakes and viewpoints into one easy loop.

Top 10 things to see in Bogotá by quad bike

  1. Monserrate — the mountain that watches over downtown Bogotá; the access road climbing the eastern hills makes a scenic ride on its own, even though the summit is reached only by cable car or on foot.
  2. La Calera (Patios / Mirador road) — a winding mountain road just east of the city with sweeping views over the savanna, a favourite with weekend riders.
  3. Laguna de Guatavita — the sacred Muisca lagoon behind the legend of El Dorado, about 1.5 hours out and one of the classic day trips from Bogotá.
  4. Embalse de Tominé — a large reservoir near Guatavita with lakeside roads, restaurants and plenty of photo stops.
  5. Represa del Neusa — a pine-forested reservoir and recreation area north of the savanna, good for a longer loop.
  6. Peña de Suesca — dramatic sandstone cliffs along the old Bogotá–Suesca rail line, popular with climbers and riders alike.
  7. Chía — an easy-going savanna town just north of the city, a natural first stop on the way toward Guatavita or Zipaquirá.
  8. Catedral de Sal de Zipaquirá — the famous underground salt cathedral, a well-known extended day-trip target.
  9. Parque Chicaque — a cloud-forest reserve south-west of Bogotá with mirador views over the Sabana, reached along a rural mountain road.
  10. Choachí / Páramo de Cruz Verde route — a high-altitude páramo road east of the city ending at hot springs, a route locals love on quads and dirt bikes.

What do you need to rent a quad bike in Bogotá?

Rental operators typically ask for a valid driving licence — the exact category recognised for cuatrimotos varies by company, and off-road operators often set their own rules, so it's worth checking with your specific rental before booking. Colombia's general minimum age for a motorised-vehicle licence is 18, though many rental companies set their own minimum, often higher depending on the machine. You'll usually need to leave a deposit, either in cash or as a hold on a credit card, along with your passport or ID. An International Driving Permit isn't legally required, but carrying one alongside your home licence is the safer option.

How much does it cost to rent a quad bike in Bogotá?

Average rental prices run around 65,000–90,000 COP per day in low season, rising to roughly 130,000–220,000 COP per day in high season for a comparable quad. Larger or newer 4x4 and twin-seat models can run 300,000 COP per day and up.

  • Prices climb during December–January and again in June–July, when demand peaks.
  • February and the September–October window tend to be cheapest, with fewer tourists on the road.
  • Booking a few days ahead in high season helps you lock in the better rate and machine.

When to book a rental quad bike in Bogotá?

High season runs December–January, around Holy Week in March or April, and again from June to August — book ahead if you're travelling then, since prices and demand both rise. April–May and October–November are quieter and cheaper, though also wetter, so mountain roads can get slippery. The best riding windows overall are December–March and July–August, when the savanna's drier spells line up with good visibility on the mountain roads.

Local traffic rules in Bogotá

Colombia drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider, and motorised vehicles must run with headlights on at all times, day and night. Urban speed limits sit around 50 km/h on city streets, dropping to 30 km/h near schools and residential areas, while rural roads outside Bogotá are generally 80 km/h. Alcohol tolerance is essentially zero — sanctions start at just 0.02% BAC, so it's best not to drink at all before riding. Keep your licence and documents on hand, since checkpoints are routine on the roads leading out of the city.
