Paris is a beautiful city to look at through a car window, but you'll enjoy it far more from the seat of a motorcycle. Rent a motorcycle in Bagnolet and you can be weaving past Père Lachaise Cemetery within minutes, or heading out to the lakes and wooded loops of the Bois de Vincennes before the tour buses even leave their hotels. From there, the whole of Paris opens up — Montmartre's hilltop views, the canal-side streets of Canal Saint-Martin, all reachable without waiting for a Métro or hunting for a parking spot.
Bagnolet sits right outside the périphérique, which makes it a smart base for exploring on two wheels. Paris traffic is famously dense, but the sights themselves are close together — most are a 20 to 40 minute ride apart — so a nimble bike beats a car for both speed and parking. A scooter rental in Bagnolet also lets you cross easily between the packed inner city and the green space at its edges, something the metro network handles awkwardly at best.
The licence you need depends on the machine. Category A1 covers bikes up to 125cc / 11 kW and requires you to be at least 16, while A2 covers restricted-power machines from age 18. Rental companies in Bagnolet often set their own minimum, commonly 18 or higher for bigger models. A deposit is standard, usually held as a credit card pre-authorisation and refunded on undamaged return — confirm the amount with your chosen operator. If you're visiting from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence.
Average rental price is around 25 EUR per day during low season, rising to 35–45 EUR in high season, and premium models can run 50–70 EUR per day.
High season runs June to August, when Paris is busiest and prices peak. Low season, from November to March, is quieter and cheaper, though you'll want warmer layers for the ride. If you want the best of both — good weather and lighter demand — aim for late spring or September, and reserve at least a few days ahead once summer approaches.
France drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a motorised two-wheeler, and CE-approved gloves are a legal requirement too — unusual outside France, but strictly enforced. Dipped headlights must stay on at all times, day and night. Speed limits in built-up areas like Bagnolet and Paris are 50 km/h, dropping to 80 km/h on rural roads without a central barrier. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightening to effectively zero (0.2 g/l) for riders still in their first three years of licence.
