Varna doesn't feel like a city you're meant to walk. It stretches long and flat along the Black Sea, and the best of it lines up in a single easy corridor — the Sea Garden's shaded paths, the open boardwalk of Varna Beach, the gilded dome of the cathedral catching the light above the old town. Pedal that route on a fresh morning, past the dolphinarium and the open-air theatre, and Varna stops being a checklist and starts feeling like somewhere you actually live for a day.
That flatness is exactly why a bike works so well here. The centre, the Sea Garden and the beach strip are all level and compact, so cycling beats walking hands-down for stringing together the cathedral, the Roman baths, the aquarium and a swim in one loop. Parking in the old town is tight and traffic can bunch up at peak hours, so a bike also frees you to head further out — up the coast to Golden Sands or inland to the woods around Aladzha Monastery — without waiting on a bus or splitting a taxi fare.
Nothing complicated. Bulgaria doesn't require a licence to cycle at any age, and helmets aren't compulsory for adults — you'll only need a reflective vest if you're riding outside built-up areas after dark. Rental shops normally just ask for an ID and a small deposit, so no IDP or paperwork beyond that.
Rates in EUR shift a lot across the year:
July and August are the busiest and priciest months, when the coast fills up with summer visitors, so book ahead if you're travelling then. The cheapest and quietest window runs November to March, though most coastal rental activity slows down over winter. If you'd rather ride in comfortable weather without the peak-season rates, late spring or September is the sweet spot.
Bulgaria drives on the right, so keep that in mind at junctions and roundabouts. Helmets aren't required for adult cyclists, though it's still sensible to wear one. Watch your speed around the promenade and old-town streets, where pedestrians and outdoor cafés spill onto the path, and note that Bulgaria enforces a strict 0.5 g/l blood-alcohol limit — worth remembering if your ride includes a seaside lunch with wine.
