Side rewards anyone willing to leave the tour bus behind. Cycle the harbor promenade at golden hour and the columns of the Temple of Apollo catch the light in a way no coach window ever will. Push a little further along the flat riverside path and you reach Manavgat Waterfall, where the water is wide and low and the cafés lining the bank make an easy excuse to stop for tea.
The old town of Side sits on a narrow peninsula where cars are mostly kept out and the lanes are too tight and too crowded for anything bigger than two wheels. Outside the walls, the coast toward Manavgat and Belek flattens out into open, rideable ground with barely a hill in sight. A bicycle gets you through the pedestrian core and onto the coast road without the parking headaches or short-hop taxi fares that come with a car, which makes it the natural way to see this stretch of the Turkish Riviera.
None of this requires a licence — a bicycle is open to anyone. There's no age minimum to worry about either, though rental shops will often ask for a small deposit, usually held on a card, to cover the vehicle. No international driving permit is needed for a bicycle, unlike the scooters and mopeds also on offer around town.
A basic city or beach bike runs from around 150 TRY per day in low season up to roughly 350–450 TRY per day in the height of summer. If you'd rather cover ground without the pedaling, e-bikes and higher-spec rentals go for 600–900 TRY per day.
July and August are the busiest and priciest months, driven by peak heat and the summer crowds. From November through March, low season sets in — prices drop and a few shops close their doors entirely. If you want the best of both, aim for the shoulder months around late spring or early autumn, when the coast is quieter and temperatures are far kinder to a day in the saddle.
Turkey drives on the right, so keep to that side of the promenade and coast road. Helmets aren't a legal requirement for adult cyclists, but riding one is a sensible habit given the mixed, sometimes unpredictable traffic in resort areas during summer. Speed limits for motor vehicles run up to 50 km/h in town, so drivers sharing the road with you are moving briskly — ride defensively, especially around the old town gates. And if a day on two wheels turns into an evening out, remember Turkey's drink-drive limits apply to motorised traffic, not bicycles, but common sense on unlit coastal roads at night still applies.
